K-Rimes, sounds perfect, look forward to tasting it.  Do you like acidic, sour fruits?  Have you tasted the Cas guava? That's another one I want to try.

I am pretty much open to anything. I eat pitangatubas out of hand so that says something about sour, I guess. I have a cas guava and myrtoides but haven't had any fruit from them. Cas was going ok till a deer got to it. I have a few others rare guavas which I can't recall the name of. I'm a big fan of guavas for 9b, bulletproof pretty much. Have a psidium guiensis and the "araza banana" from Marcos in Argentina that were awesome this year "skittles guava", seriously tastes like skittles candy.

K-Rimes, I want skittle tasting guavas!  Looked at Marcos' seed list and couldn't figure out which one you have.  Let me know if you have seeds or plants to sell in the future.

Brad, do you have any of the seedless guava varieties?  I have a crystal seedless, but it's the slowest grower for me and still hasn't bloomed or set fruit.

I had a crystal tree that Simon had planted here but it was infested with scales and ended up dying  :'(

I am airlayering a white, sweet guava right now that is to die for. I think it is just called tropical white. It makes fruit the size of a softball, intensely tropical smelling, sweet and creamy. I love to eat them after they are chilled. I sold most of the airlayers to City Farmer's nursery about a month and a half ago. I have a small handful left on the tree. If the ants don't destroy them I will be able to pot them up, lol. Luckily, I transitioned on to a pot at my place earlier in the year. Its leafing out quite well. I tried to root cuttings from the tree several times and had not success. I am growing lots of seedlings from the mother tree and plant to do approach grafts this spring. I just collected like a half a cup of seeds from fruit this week so if you are local I can give you some seeds. I am in San Diego.

Hi James,

Can you put me on a waiting list for one of the air layers?

I also have that white guava.  They are good ones.  The pink one maybe slightly better but they taste pretty similar. The white ones get bigger but I always thinned it.  The pink trees from frank are further from the house and never get thinned so the fruit are not as large as they could be.  Branches are also breaking from the load on Frank's trees.

Sure Janet. The ones I put on after March are taking their sweet time. Hopefully I will have 6 to cut off of the tree by January. I will be doing another round in early March just before the buds break. That seems to be the sweet spot.

"Araza banana" which I believe is Psidium Guinieense or an SP - Janet I can just send you some near ripe fruit. Easier than seeds. Leave on the counter for a few days and should soften up.

Long leaf guava interior, very pink, seeds kind of soft. Would be a decent guava to try to hybridize with tropical?

The long leaf in 20g. It is producing heavily at this size. I'll tie it up to the stake more once it's done fruiting

I have a Taiwanese guava that I like a lot. It has seeds but not many. Sweet and crispy.  Peruvian white was very good. Creamy/sweet like Mexican cream.

I have a Guava seedling that I planted in 2019 as a 1 gal. It is from Cal-Poly Pomona's farm store/nursery. I had emailed them after buying it during one of their tropical fruit sales (for $5!) and asked about it's origin. This is what I was told, it "was a discovery by Prof emeritus, Dr. Greg Partida. Propagated by seed. Has a fragrance of strawberries, not super pink flesh."

It has not fruited yet, and has had some leaf drop each Winter and is about 3ft tall in bush form.

Can you experienced Guava masters guess if I might see some flowers (and what time of year) this coming year? How long are you waiting for fruits from your young Guavas? I am in Riverside County CA for weather reference. I'm dying to taste it. I haven't seen anyone else mention acquiring one from Cal-Poly.
It's always a good day when you get to plant a tree.

Seedlings in my yard flowered any where from 9 months to 3rd year.
On cold winter some loss all leaves and some kept leaves.

Guava flowers on new growth.
I trim all the branches in Feb.
Many flowers open by spring to early summer.

Thank you!! I will keep my fingers cross for this coming year as it's more established now. I will be sure to cut it back after our last frost in Feb.

I got a Mexican cream guava from lowes last year and it had a fruit last year but the rodents beat me to it. It looked/smelled real good. I'll bag them this year if I get any.

Hi

Were you able to see the flesh color of the fruits?

Brad, do you know if either of your guava trees have some dark red/pink colors on the stem and leaves of the new growth?  If it does, then it might be the Dolores.

I found some photos of the cuttings before grafting and noticed this color on the cuttings.

I will look at them next time I'm down there and let you know.  One tree got beat up pretty bad in the wind we had a week ago.  Lots of broken branches.  It has a bad growth patter already and sets lots of fruit breaks branches.

All my fruit are pink inside.  They dont look like franks pics of either of his rojo or dolores.  Its a mystery.  It is a nice guava, this one tasted good.  Maybe its the rojombut the tree said dolores.

Definitely not a 20 or 30 brix.  Maybe a 15.

Brad, the fruit looks good. If it tastes good, then it's a winner.
It does look like Jalisco Red to me. It could be a pink or red color flesh depending on the photography.

Kinda like the Blue Java bananas that can often look like a fluorescent blue bananas by most retailer photos?

Galka, where did you find the Taiwanese white and the Peruvian white?

Does anyone have an Egyptian guava? Does the white flesh or yellow flesh taste better?

Walmart had the Taiwanese white for sale last year. The Peruvian white - at the local plant sale.
