Has anyone been following this Yangmei auction on ebay? Current bid is $3,000 is it because of the variety, hype, or demand? maybe all of the above. Im shocked, glad I got in on this group order.
Capitalism. "A fool and his money are soon parted," so if they want it let them pay. Consider this, we in this group buy, are hoping to get viable plants that might grow and might not. The failure rates are super high and yet we still want the chance because we see it as an opportunity. Opportunity costs. It is to the buyer to determine if the price is too high. :-[

Value is relative. Why wait when you can pay and it doesn't hurt.

If I bought a 3k tree it would hurt a lot. First the wallet, and then even worse the ass kicking my wife would deliver. Kids might jump in too.

Good luck everyone with your trees!

Crazy! If anyone is interested in other varieties including this Hard Flesh, we can have another group order. But not very soon, first let’s recover our trees and make them survive.

Actually the Anhai which we ordered is also called Prince soft silk or soft flesh, is similar to or even more popular than the hard flesh in eBay bidding.

Folks,
There are some trees remaining as shown in the pictures attached, the vendor added them for backup.
about 10 wusu + 15 ( biqi + anhai) + 15 male trees.  I put here for bidding, the starting bidding price is $300, the winner gets all the trees. Then I will pack them up for the shipping to the highest bidder.  I am thinking of donating the money to the TFF website. The winner is expected to pay the shipping cost.

In the second box, Biqi and Anhai labels are lost, they are mixed up.
In the third box, they are all male trees, some labels are lost.

We might should consider donating to our local USDA centers and botanical gardens. Think I will locally.

Myrica rubra is an obligate N fixer and uses a species Frankia bacteria to create its own N inside on nodules in their roots, I’m not sure that it is wise to remove all root nodules because it would prevent the plants from producing their own nitrogen. The lose of their symbiotic bacteria might slow down the trees growth. I’m sure mixing in a microrhyzel  mix might help the plants but removing all the nitrogen nodules might be hard on the plant. Here is an article about their nodule formation but there are a few articles about it
http://www.lykxyj.com/en/article/id/19940311

Hey Murraystevena2,

I checked the galls and they are not Frankia Actinomycetes. This article discusses the nodule formation of Frankia and the cascade of gene expression post infection.

https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ajb/article/download/14883/58628

I dissected a few nodules to see if I can find any Iron like reddish brown coloration and the galls are cream colored or whitish like your typical root. The morphology of these galls are identical to the other group buy where the roots were more heavily infested.

The roots on these trees have this morphology

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-52118-4.pdf?pdf=button%20sticky

Frankia can have different morphologies but they would typically look something like this

Oh no, were trees infected with RKN in this order also?!

Got some Yangmei in Florida now, I soaked the roots below the graft for 30 minutes in very diluted rooting hormone/water. Then, proceeded to wrap the trees in Buddy grafting tape above the graft unions. Then into some damp/moist (not wet) well draining soil and into the humid greenhouse. Wishing everyone the best of luck. Everyone send Bill a Thank You!

The male trees I got are seedlings, confirming the hunch of others. Also, they were all dried out...Of course that can be expected with group orders it's a huge gamble sometimes...I'll do a write up later tonight with more details.

Hi Bill

My trees don't look alive. None of them has a green graft. it looks like they were scratched to check if the grafts were still alive before they were shipped. I wish you sent me at least one alive tree...

Do you think I had time to scratch the trees, pick up the dead ones and send them to you? Even if I had time, why I needed to do that to you?

On 1/19 night, first I was busy in charging local pick up for the bay area, elouicious(Daniel) was also helping the packaging,  then after 10:30 pm, I started to assort the trees for LA and San Diego folks in 5 packages, some people wanted me pack in separate bags, this took extra time in preparation. Around 1 AM, I started to work on the packages for next day's shipment till 4:30 am. I slept less than two hours, and at 7:00 am, packed up two more boxes, then rushed to the bus stop for the package delivery in San Jose. After dropping the 5 boxed in the bus heading down to LA, I moved to a nearby post office for the first round of shipment for FL and Hawaii folks. Then I rushed back to home for other people's local pick up.

I knew potentially lots of complaints may come up again including the pests issue. That's why before Pouya and I left the USDA office, I double checked with USDA person who was in charge of releasing our trees, she said no pests were found in the inspection.

I truly feel sorry about the trees you received, if there is a next round, I will pick the best trees for you.

I did lots of preparations, even built a greenhouse, and at the end... Got dead trees !

Though I was not in on this buy, I was in on the last one. I had a few that looked rough and I just did my best to get them to live. It's all you can do. In the end, I didn't have any plants to show for it - that's just part of the risk you take in buying plants in general. The shipping across country at this time is very challenging as well, and if they went through the wrong hub or sat on the tarmac too long, they would die from cold completely unrelated to Bill or the seller overseas. I think Bill does a phenomenal job with these group buys and it's clearly a LOT of work.

I know it hurts to lose a plant, and some money too, but that's just part of the deal with these yangmei orders. It's gambling and losses are common.

My trees all look good after the scratch test, all of them seemed to be green. there was some dieback on some of the branches but minimal. Like everyone said, its a gamble and Bill did a great job facilitating what he had to work with.

That is my listing. This variety is a different variety than any of the other one going around. It is also an established tree. There is a huge benefit of buying an established tree vs trying to grow one form bare root. I was part of the last group order and got something like 23 trees. Guess what I have to show for those... 2 male trees infected with RKN.

How did you prepare your trees out of the 26? Did you wrap them each with parafilm and use rooting hormone supplements, were they kept in high humidity in a greenhouse, there are a lot of factors. Along with viability factors from each order. Just curious, cheers!

Well here is my update writing...

These trees I got are for a friend.
Bill sent us 2 wusu 1 biqi 2 dk males 1 late growing male. The tips were dying back so grafting was not an option. Also, the roots were not as healthy as last order. I'll give a 50% chance to get at least 1 tree growing. Group orders are hard, and much thanks to Bill. Whether the trees grow or not is not in the power of us or Bill or the exporter. It's just if the tree wants to live it'll live. You need decent care and good RNG to make these survive. I've dedicated over blank amount of dollars of money to growing this and am happy to say I have been successful in some parts. BUT that does not come with many dead trees and other failures. If you want to be successful you have to be willing to adapt and learn. Don't give up if you failed, but if you do, don't worry, there are people out there who haven't given up and will supply you with trees. Of course it comes with a price. We've dedicated countless dollars and hours to get these to grow, what can you expect?
Anyways, if you haven't already, check out the yangmei thread by Simon. There's a plethora of information on there. Anyways much thanks to Bill, and I wish you all the best with reviving your trees. If you want any help, feel free to pm me, or just check out previous threads.
Best,
Ryan

How do you know your established trees aren’t infected with RKN??? Let’s see the roots.
