Purple Mulberry Identification help
« on: June 14, 2022, 05:50:59 PM »
Tag said "purple mulberry" bought it from a nursery in central FL that didn't know the variety. Large leaves grow to 12" long x 10" wide, leaves aren't fuzzy on underside. Dark purple fruit about 1.5" - 2" long, critters usually eat it first, the few I've gotten have been nice tangy/sweet flavor.

Any ideas on variety? Thank you in advance.

My Tice was like that. The fruit doesn't look long enough for Pakistani to my eye. Tice had big leaves

I took some photos before to compare my Tice fruit/leaves with my Shangri La. So, you can look at my photos and maybe see which one your tree and fruit matches.

Here's the fruits:

Tice it is! Pictures were really helpful, thank you so much.

I've been stealth planting the cuttings in a nearby park and will hopefully get more fruit one of these days, it seems to vanish from my yard.

Personally I don't know how Kaz does it... If I don't cover may fruit with netting the birds get first dibs on all the ripe ones... not really practical for a larger yard size tree.
Surely there are birds in SoCal?

Kevin, I think I just have to many mulberry trees so the birds can't eat all the fruits. I also have a few Copper's Hawk that grew up near my house so they keep guard and eat fruit mice, squirrels, and other small birds in the trees. The hawks like to hang out in my citrus trees and plumeria trees. The hawk may have eaten the baby hummingbirds (nest and all) that was on my sapodilla tree under my loquat trees. The hummingbird eggs just hatch a week ago and now everything is gone.

Kaz, unfortunately, I was unable to root the Black Pakistan cuttings you were so generous to share. So when I saw Home Depot here had what was labeled a "Pakistan Mulberry", I had to get it. Do the leaves and trunk look right for a Pakistan? Thanks!

fliptop, your first photo shows leaves with fingers, the Black Pakistan doesn't have leaves like that, it's leaves are single spade shape.

I have had to bag my pakistanis to get them. I live in a really rural basically national forest type area. Got none till I bagged them. Tree is too big to net now so the bagging is ok. I tried a peace offering of bird seed feeders somewhat nearby and they would stuff their faces with seeds AND mulberries... Sigh.

Thanks, Kaz! If it makes a difference, it's the new growth that has the fingers--the older leaves look like this:

As an aside, Kevin, the Thai Dwarf trees I got from you have done well! Not quite to Kaz's level, but maybe one day??

fliptop, if you know how to graft, I can send you some Black Pakistan cuttings now to graft onto your tree you purchased.

Just pay for the shipping cost ($10), send me a message if you need some for grafting.

Thanks, Kaz! I've successfully cleft grafted mangos three times, with many more failures both with cleft and veneer grafts. If cleft grafting works and now is a good time of year to graft, I am definitely interested and appreciate your generosity! Thank you!
