I am very interested in acidless oranges. There seems to be two different cultivars Vainiglia Sanguigno and Vainiglia/Sucari/Succory. How are both in comparison according to taste and flesh consistency?

I have the VANIGLIA SANGUIGNO ACIDLESS SWEET ORANGE (VI-442), have not heard of the other one you mentioned. My grafted tree is old now (15+yrs) and in the first 2-3 yrs the fruit tasted bad, no flavor since there is no acid, very insipid. But lately, I noticed the fruit is tasting better, actual taste like an orange, still no acid but has a little more flavor. I was ready to cut down the tree but now I'm thinking of taking some scionwood first so I can graft it to my multi-grafted tree before I get rid of the tree. The tree is productive, have many fruits on it now.

I read that the flesh is much finer then an orange and that the juice feels for like a juice for example from a banana or mango.

I have a vaniglia sanguingo in a small container that makes a couple fruit each year.  It is currently tied with rangpur for my least favorite citrus :)

It is just like a regular orange but no tartness (insipid).  It doesn't have any different texture or other attributes I've noticed.

Have you ever thought of hybridising those two ?
Even just to see if it could get worse ?

Just cut a few fruits, the New Zealand lemon, Vaniglia Sanguigno, and my variegated Valecnia orange. The taste of these three, I like the New Zealand lemon the best, then the Vaniglia Sanguigno, and the Variegated Valencia is even more inspid than the Sanguigno (no taste).

Here's the photo.

Hah, combining them you might actually get a good fruit!

Just to add another opinion... Vainiglia Sanguigno is one of my favourite Citrus to eat (although I haven't had one for a few years). I think it helps to consider it a different fruit entirely from an orange. Like if you're craving an acidic orange, Vainiglia is absolutely not going to hit the spot.

The ones I ate had a slight pink tinge to the flesh, and were very sweet. I would've eaten them in about mid Summer. The flavour reminded me of artificial candied citrus peel. People like to eat melons, and nobody complains that they're not acidic haha. Same thing with Vainiglia.

Brian,

There are some advantages to growing the Vainiglia Sanguigno here in SoCal. Like I said, the taste of my fruits got better, now it is not just sweet, it has a little tartness, peels like an orange, so I like it. Also, all my Sanguigno fruits are already ripe in November before any of my other navel oranges so I can eat them earlier. The only other orange I have ripe is the Valencia which has continued to have fruits ripen from Feb - Nov.

I did grow a Vaniglia orange, but it went on the back burner as I wasn't too rapt with the fruit flavour, neither here nor there in a way for my tastes.
I haven't given the variety much attention, maybe it has it's moments ?
I probably prefer some of the Blood Oranges that fail to develop pigment due to the weather, still an Orange but lighter flavour than Navel etc.

I did find some seeds in my fruits I ate. Since this tree with the VS has two other grafted branches of very good navel oranges, maybe the seedling will be different.

Update on my taste test this week. I had some ripe navel orange, valencia orange, and vainiglia sanguigno.

Here's how they compared for me, #1 is best, #4 least.
1. Vainiglia Sanguigno (VI-442)
2a. Navel orange
2b. Washington Sanguine blood orange (VI-521)
3. Var. Hamlin orange
4. Valencia orange/var. Valencia orange

It seems the Vainiglia Sanguigno has the same issue as Valentine pummelo. Sometimes people who tastes the Valentine say it has no acid and is insipid and other times it has a little tartness to make it tastes very good.

JSea I agree with your comments. To me, the Vainiglia Sanguigno on my old tree (graft is over 15 + yrs old now) is very good tasting, sweet with very little/mild acidic taste. This may be a good variety for people who do not like acidic citrus fruits. I plan to graft some scionwood on a few of my other trees before I remove this tree since I like the fruit now. I prefer to eat this fruit out of hand than the New Zealand lemon.

I also grow the Washington Sanguine blood orange (VI-521), and the Vainiglia Sanguigno (VI-442) tastes better.

So you mean, Vaniglia tastes better than Vaniglia sanguigno - right?

No, I don't grow the Vaniglia orange. The only variety UCR has from their budwood program is the Vaniglia Sanguigno (VI-442) acidless sweet orange.

The Vaniglia Sanguigno (VI-442) tastes better than the Washington Sanguine blood orange (VI-521) to me. Both of these are grafted on separate trees and are about 10-15yrs old. I also have other Washington oranges (cara cara, late lane, parent Washington orange) that tastes much better than the Washinton Sanguine blood orange (VI-521).

I updated my list above.

I bought this tree a couple years ago after reading an article by Fruitmentor.  He mentions combining Vaniglia Sanguigno juice with other citrus like limequat makes juice that is "astonishingly delicious."  Also states that juice industry combines Vaniglia Sanguigno with high acid Valencia juice to make a better tasting orange juice.

Looking forward to my tree fruiting.

It’s acidless and taste like vanilla though?
Mines is all blood orangey.
I’ll post a picture

Jonah, yup, many of my blood oranges do not have much red flesh color in my location. One time the Vaniglia show a little streak of red in the flesh. Yes, I would like to see a photo of your fruit.

I have the Rhodes Red Valencia, Smith Red Valencia, Tarocco #7 blood orange, Bream Tarocco blood, Cara Cara blood orange, Boukhobza blood orange, Maltaise Demi Sanguine blood orange. So far I don't think any of these gives a nice red flesh for me. Even the Valentine pummelo hybrid only shows the red flesh once in a while. I only have one unknown seedling pummelo (Tony #1) that always shows the nice red color flesh regularly.

sc4001992,  no red colored fruit is of course due to your warm location.  Let me ask you a question.  Looking at your photos and the amazing fruit set do you follow UCR's Low Biuret Urea  spray program?

Millet, no I don't spray anything on my trees, they only get water and sometimes fertilizer once a year.  My trees are in ground and do not need much help.

Here's a few more photos, first one is the Vainiglia Sanguigno next to a Navel orange.
My fruit does not show any blood orange color inside.

Here's a few photos of my Cara Cara orange.
This fruit does show some pink shade of color in the flesh.

The pink coloration in Cara Cara is due to the antioxidant lycopene.  lycopene coloration is not affected by temperature.

Oh, I didn't know that about the Cara Cara fruit, thanks for this info. I did read somewhere that lycopene has some anti-cancer property.
