Pot size for atemoyas and sugar apples
« on: January 12, 2023, 06:48:57 PM »
Hi,

What is a reasonable pot size for atemoyas and sugar apples?  And about how much space should I leave between plants (as a minimum)?  I don't have much space available so I need to optimize it as much as I can....

I was thinking on going 15 gallons final size, and put the plants apart every 2 feet (i.e., each plant in its' 2x2 cell).

Can you guys offer some help on this?

Thanks!

I've had atemoya fruit in a container around that size or less so you should be good

These are full sun plants so you want to make sure no parts are significantly shaded by other nearby plants.  The exact dimensions aren't really important.  With my many, many container trees I end up arranging them all so that the full-sun-only plants are shading the part-shade plants, but not each other.  It is like a puzzle every spring to find the best fit.

I have mine in 20 gallon pots and they fruit, though often drop the fruit early, probably a sunlight thing...

Sugar Apple - I get about 5 decent sized fruits from a 5 gal container. Plants are about 5yrs old. That said I am planning on up-potting to a 7 gal. 5 fruits to sample for a year is good enough for me. I have to haul these into the garage for 5 months out of the year.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment.  Yes, even 5 fruits per plant would be fine by me.

Could you show me pictures of the trees?   I would like to understand better how to prune/train them to keep them small enough yet productive.

Here are pics of my Isan Indigo seedling. Now about 5yrs old in a 5 gal container. Added a close-up so you might see where I pruned before. I will be pruning more than a foot each of the bigger branches in early March so that it will create new growth and flowers around the time I take them out in early April.
