Breadfruit in North Queensland
« on: January 18, 2023, 11:48:56 AM »
Good day, all. I'm a US-based geographer with a research interest in breadfruit. I've posted a few times on this forum before, seeking information from growers in Florida and Bermuda and I'm grateful for all the good responses I've received.

Later this year (May, to be precise), I plan to be in Australia for a short visit, and I'm interested in meeting breadfruit growers in North Queensland. I'd like to learn about the successes and challenges you've seen and generally discuss the breadfruit scene in Australia. I'll be based in Cairns but will have a rental car and am absolutely willing to drive wherever I need to be. If you're interested, please contact me by email (rfielding@coastal.edu) or just reply to this message.

Many thanks!

Maybe a couple of our Nth Qld members could chip in on this ?

I have seen both Breadfruit and Breadnuts in Nth Qld 20 years ago. They weren't that common, most often in the hands of fruit enthusiasts, fruitarians, raw foodists and nudists.
And those categories are not necessarily exclusive. Most trees I saw were one offs in gardens, farms and some in public parks or old fruit research stations.
Possibly you could start researching before you go.
There is the Rare Fruit Council in Nth Qld.
Also there are some Tropical Fruit Research Stations.
I will also email you directly.

I have a breadfruit but it's pretty tiny at the moment. I know a lot of breadfruit is grown around Cape Tribulation and there is a breadfruit tree near where I live on public land. Breadfruit are fruiting now here.

Thank you both for your responses. I'd love to hear from others who are growing breadfruit in NQ, especially those in the more southern parts of the state who might consider themselves to be "zone-pushers."

There may be trees or researchers at the sites listed above.
I think there are still Breadfruit trees at the old Kamerunga site.

These rare fruit groups might be useful to contact
