Have uncommon banana varieties for trade
« on: February 10, 2023, 10:51:48 AM »
Hello, I'm in SW Florida and I have suckers of several types of banana varieties to trade:
Praying hands, SH3640, Real blue java, Patupi, Dwarf namwa. Dwarf red, and musa 'rose'

I have confirmed all of these to be the correct varieties and are not mislabeled.
I'm looking for other unique banana varieties or any other interesting types of plants. Thanks!

Get raja puri it's not that rare but my favorite. Perfect size trees like 8 foot max, good cold hardiness, really good tasting small fruit.

Java16,

I'll have to agree with Rainman about 'Raja Puri', for the same several reasons as he states above.

Further, author W. O. Lessard in his OOP 1992 book, "The Complete Book of Bananas," refers to the 'Raja Puri' cultivar as being a 'bullet proof' banana.  From my own experience this seems to be the case, so I'd recommend it to you.

Mine in a 2 gal. pot and about 3 ft. tall and spindly, made it through the Dec. '22 cold snap here in Tampa (a couple of hours at 32ºF.) and sustained only a little leaf-burn with no more protection than being placed under my north-facing pergola which is about 70% covered with a Petrea volubilis (= Queen's Wreath) vine.

Since the worst of the cold temps seem to be past for this season my 'Raja puri' was, as of Feb. 6th, planted out into the ground in a full-sun area of my yard.  It is already pushing out a new leaf.

Any reliable sources for raja puri? Havent seen anything online. A few sketch websites have them "available" but then you go to the site and its out of stock.

I've got raja puri bananas. After our huge freeze this year they are pretty beat up. Hopefully a few nice pups will come up this spring. If they do I can send off a few.
Trying to grow it all!

Appreciate the link umass but the site reviews arent convincing haha. So many people selling mislabeled bananas nowadays, probably not worth $30 from here, personally.

That nursery has a well-earned horrible reputation, especially for mislabeled plants. I hope the mods won't take issue with me linking to another forum, but here's a thread with many years of complaints on another forum I frequent:

Jave 16,

Going Bananas in Homestead also stocks the 'Raja Puri' cultivar.  They seem to be a reliable source.

Here is a link:

I’ll have lots of Musa raja puri later this spring. They are amazing! Also recommend dwarf Brazilian. Very similar taste but a better grower and has no issues choking. Be careful there is a lot of “fake” raja puri out there.

I am a well known Musa grower/researcher and only sell true to type pups.

I have pictures on my site. www.bananapups.com

I would like to know more info on the Musa Rose.  We have a few varieties you don't show listed and willing to trade with you.  Mysore, Raja puri, dwarf brazilian, Manzano, dwarf Orinoco, dwarf Puerto Rican Plantain, maybe a few others.  Im also looking for a variegated Florida Musa if anyone has one available.
