Does anyone grow ackee?
« on: February 13, 2025, 11:53:46 AM »
So, just got back from the Caribbean, and loved all the ackee growing in Jamaica.
I am thinking about growing it in my greenhouse.
Does anyone else grow it?
Not worried about the size as I generally keep things pruned down.

Cheers,
Carolyn

I have a grafted one in a 1gal I bought last spring.  It has been growing steadily.  No flowers yet.

I see they are commonly grown from seed, not sure if grafting is saving much time.

It grows all around my neighborhood and I get to reap the benefits of the neighbors trees

Awesome! Did not know it did that well in FL. I never saw it there or heard of people growing it. Very cool.

Oh yea! The Jamaicans are responsible for it. Certain neighborhoods are chock full and they grow very easily and fruit in as little as 5 years. I'm lucky to have had access to a very nice dry crunchy variety which is very good raw compared to others I've tried.

Sweet sweet Jamaica , Land I love.
May this post not devolve into a fear monger’ing of how poisonous this delightful fruit is .
I have a 6 year old Ackee planted in Hawaii that has been slow growing (8ft) but healthy.
They must love that west palm sugar sand soil like the Mango’s do.

Indeed. They are very hardy(except for hurricanes). I tend to think the genetics growing here must be somewhat "choice" considering the seeds came from preferred selections in Jamaica and the best adapted have been propogated repeatedly whether by seed or graft. I know people who take their Ackee very seriously, and have friends that collect like mangoes! There is a tree on my property line that is around 40ft tall and about the same years old.

They get an undue bad rap for sure. I've eaten a substantial amount raw/cooked and haven't had any issues. It's somewhat of a primal intuition in understanding that the fruit is only edible once open on the tree. The squirrels certainly know!

I have a tree in Miami growing and fruiting in alkaline soil. It will eventually get large if left unchecked. Safe to eat once you understand the process, similar to monstera.
