some tiny beetles emerged from an imported plinia seed
« on: March 21, 2025, 12:05:21 PM »
I've seen tiny seed-boring beetles crawling around my seed trays before, but I always assumed they were in the soil and boring into the seeds.  In this case it is clear that these bugs came from within the seed and busted out.  It was a dry seed packed in vermiculite.  I should have gotten a macro photo before tossing them

Good call, we definitely don't need any more imported pests here. I try to burn stuff like that, garbage is 2nd option. Compost is a no-no

I hucked it into the yard without thinking, should have burned it.  It is still freezing at night here, I hope that's enough to kill tropical bugs.

I would have taken a blowtorch to it just for the satisfaction of watching them burn.

Microwave or freezer, then trash.

Welp
USDA sometimes misses them on inspection, but yes if they are found, seeds are disposed of properly.
They probably will die with the temperatures though I wouldn’t worry too much

I'm nearly positive sure they emerged from the seed after I received them.  No way inspectors would have been able to catch this one!

Some type of  bostrichid borer there are many species. your seeds probably had eggs in them.

I had this happen to some rare variety of coffee seeds that I was preparing to ship home via APHIS.
I always mail them on our last stop when traveling, and the little buggars chewed through the seeds before I mailed them, so I put them in a ziplock bag and burned them. Bummer.

That's why it is important not to buy anything from other countries if possible. I wish you destroyed the bug.

I received some seeds that USDA inspected. One had a hole in the seed, with a dead beetle in the bag. I left them on the counter, and another beetle emerged from another. Not Eugenia.

Hello Brian,
I reckon you should contact the seller.
Who knows - there could be an entire contaminated batch of seeds!

I had bought two of these seeds, today the same beetles just emerged from the second one.  I had it in its own sealed bag so no cross contamination, but I got a good macro photo of it this time and destroyed them.

This is plinia sp. "cambuca gigante", if you bought these seeds check yours.  I'll let Kameron know

EDIT - oh, I guess it is plinia not eugenia, updated post title to match

Please destroy the seed and insect.  Don't rely on nature to do it.  You might be surprised how resilient some critters are.

Same family as Coffee B Borer, a single female lays 10 or more eggs 90% of the larva are female a single male impregnates the females and dies never seeing the light of day. Females emerge pregnant, do the math. Bostrichid Beetles are horrible little buggers that spread like wildfire under the right conditions. CBB has badly impacted the Haw'n coffee industry

I use Windex for mosquitos i can't swat.

Dropping seeds in a jar of bleach i imagine would kill any critter good as burning it or better?
