Who is growing Maluma Avocado in Fresno county or in California ?
Avoman:
I have some Maluma avo planted they have not been in ground a year yet but got through 1 winter they got a little cold damage more than I thought they would is anyone else growing them in temps that get under 31 if so how are they doing ? To me they seem to take cold temps slightly worse than a Gem does.I think the variety has great potential in CA , but I wonder if southern cal is better suited, the seed is smaller than a Hass so thats good but perhaps the tree is a little slower growing than a Hass.
Avoman:
I only know Brokaw that offers Maluma
on occasion for sale in Cal not sure
if anyone else does or when the propagation rights expire, if it was easier to get Maluma I think more would grow it.
LoPresti:
I’ve read Maluma does better than Hass in the heat and cold. And better all around besides maybe a little fiber. Do you have any photos of your Maluma tree?
Avoman:
My first winter in ground with young Maluma and Hass they took cold close to the same I think I had a mild winter don't recall it getting below 30 for short window of cold both had very slight burn most on newest leaves.pic is Maluma on Dusa
Avoman:
My biggest concern over cold on Maluma is it might be more of a side floppy grower than I prefer, taste is little diff than Hass and seed ratio is better than Hass having a smaller seed growing in Fresno county tends to make smaller fruit size so more flesh I can get the better.
