Citrus General Discussion / Re: compact lemon options
« on: February 26, 2024, 10:29:19 AM »
I heard about poor quality fruits on volkameriana in the past, and everybody told me it, when I bought Avana apireno from italian nursery on volkameriana. It was in bag, for farm growing, but I was sure that italians know what they do, and time proved my thoughs. Avanas on this tree are in top 3 of my mandarins. So, I think that volkameriana does not devalve fruit taste. As I said Oscar Tintori is number one in the market of ornamental citruses in pots in Italy and they use volkameriana.

I read study about rootstock for ornamental citruses in pot  and the result was, that the best rootstock is volkameriana, especially for lemons. It gaves compact crown and intense flowering. Oscar Tintori nursery uses exclusively volkameriana for lemons and mandarins.

The avocados took 12-18 months to grow and mature. So, what is the sense of frost hardy plant?

Amoa tastes good when red, or bright red, once turns dark red, it become tasteless or the taste is bad.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Moro vs. Tarocco vs. Amoa 8 vs. Fragola

Thanks Radoslav, is the flavor intensity about the same?

Taste of Tarocco is more complex and, taste of Amoa degrades very quickly, so there is short time when taste is very good.

Tarocco on the left, Amoa on right. Red parts of both have raspberry flavour.

In my subtropical greenhouse avocado is ripe next year, so I think there is no chance to get fruits from tree, in area where is - 6C during winter, no matter how hardy is the tree itself.

Diospyros lotus is compatible with all astrigent D.kaki and with  non-astringent D.kaki -JIRO, but generally speaking D.lotus is incompatible with pcna type kaki. The incompatibility can be overcome by using an astringent type kaki as interstock.

Early Sicily looks very nice, congrats! You say it tastes like a very sweet orange. Is there also enough acidity or not?
Yes, it is sweet and acid at the same time.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Looking for Japanese Acid Citrus [EU]
« on: October 30, 2022, 11:10:58 AM »
I used to have a kabosu plant from a seed that came from a fruit bought in France, but it died while I was on vacation a few years ago.

I still have a sudachi, also grown from seed at the same time, in 2015.

It has never fruited yet but it stays outside all winter here in Antwerp (in a rather sheltered location though). If you're interested I can send you cuttings (tell me how to do it thought because I've never sent live plants through the post) or you can drop by if you're ever close to Antwerp.

That's too bad. Adavo still has some small kabosu plants left, which I might buy.

I already have a sudachi, but I would love to get some budwood  :D

There was discussion at french https://www.agrumes-passion.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1622&start=60
that
kabosu from Adavo may originated from Riera nursery and can contain tristeza.

My more than 10 years old Nam Nam plant developed flowers for the first time. It sets flower buds several times in the past, but they dried off.
This can be the first time cynometra flowers in Slovakia at all.

Six, or seven years ago, I bought seeds from you (at least I think, that it was you, seller added some passiflora quadrangularis seeds for free). And now, I got first flowers on my Peluda de Alagoa plants.

Citrus General Discussion / Pomelo hybrid from Medici citrus collection
« on: January 01, 2022, 09:15:21 AM »
Finally ripe fruit of C. grandis x C. paradisi called “Piriforme”. Plant I bought from Tintori nursery years ago.
This pomelo hybrid belongs to the Medici citrus collection that was started by Cosimo I between 1554 and 1568 and reached its height under Cosimo III.
The fruit has thick rind that turns yellow when fully ripe. The thick pith is not edible and the flesh tastes like mix of pomelo and grapefruit, its a bit sour, but edible. Mostly for ornamental purpose.
