Sorry, I don't know what they are but suggest that, in case you get no definitive replies, then you just keep a close eye on them every day(!) until they begin to hatch.  Then post another photo of what hatched and someone maybe will recognize what they are.

It could even possibly be some beneficial bug.

Look like predatory wasp cocoons with the color and texture; probably a caterpillar got unlucky. Let us know if you see any updates

Thanks all.  i am relieved to know they are are not from pets that would wreck my trees.
i will keep an eye on the eggs and hopefully be able to take pictures when they hatch.

I agree, I've seen something exactly like this preying on a tomato hornworm.
