My Cushman was kinda ugly, and a sparse grower. I was a big fan of the fruit though.  It was knocked over twice, by hurricanes. Otherwise I'd have it still.

Thanks. You mentioned some qualities that are very important to me. I think I need to give Cac another taste.  8)

Just a few note to add about CAC especially for the south Florida growers.
First off special thanks to zands for introducing me to this variety. Harvested Budwood from his producing tree and top worked my 2 year old keitt around 4 years ago

Excellent flavor
Large window of great flavor - I personally like it just before it gets fully yellow (heres a tip use a vegetable peeler, just under the skin is intensely sweet and has that sweet cola indochinese flavor)
Forgiving of when to pick
Long shelf life after picked
Pretty disease resistant (even when something gets to it the rot doesn't really spread that quick)
Vigorous spreading grower.
Fruits consistently (at least on the top worked trees I've seen here)
Handles hard pruning in August really well.

For me it might not top the likes of lemon zest but its nearly bulletproof to grow and still has top notch flavor.

Pisang raja.   It's not a strong grower, but the flesh color convinces me that the flavor is outstanding.

I beg to differ. Minneola tangelos grown in southern Florida are better than those grown in California--not as pretty but sweeter and richer.  That said, I know there are may fine California-grown citrus fruits I have not had the opportunity to taste.


Another thing about citrus: Fruit grown in California has always been better than Florida citrus, and fruit grown in Southern California was always the best.  But those groves became subdivisions and are long gone!  I think the last great oranges/tangelos I've eaten were grown in north San Diego County.

Lots of small Sweet Tarts left, one Peach Cobbler, and one Cotton Candy (on small tree).  Oops, also a couple Spirit of 76 fruits, smaller, shaded, from a later bloom.

I would have named LZ cultivar "Just like Minneola tangelo grown in Florida on sour orange or Cleopatra rootstock."

Ate my first Lemon Zest from the tree this year. Taste on a fully ripe one was like a super sweet orange. It taste so much like the sweetest orange, it tricked my brain if I closed my eyes.

Lemon Zest is absolutely amazing. One of the few varieties I grow despite very high susceptibility to fungal diseases. One of my all time favorite Mangos!

100% agree. The experience is simply sublime and, in a sea of other mangoes currently providing fruit, Lemon Zest is a unique taste that keeps you coming back for more (if only 1 at a time because it's so damn sweet). It is still my all-time #1 and I'm not even sure if it's a relatively close call. This evening's delight: (WARNING: FOOD PORN)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mango trees have found new home.

I have an Orange Sherbet tree and a Buttercream tree. Both were neglected by owner, left in pots too long. But with good care should become great trees.

Will trade for one good mango, per tree.  To be delivered now or in the next year or two.

John, I have not tasted Orange Sherbet yet.

I'm sure it's good (and I have one still sitting in a pot  ::)

I have heard several folks who agree with Joe that OS is less intense than LZ.
And for me too much of a good thing is just about right.
Which is why I also loved the ripe, kind of chilled Pineapple Pleasure I had the other night.

There is still room in my heart for the great classic mangos, of course.

I got a couple P-22s and found them good but not great. That said, they were very green when I bought them.

Did yours have some color when picked (as far as you know)?

I also bought some green Pineapple Pleasures, which turned out fine, and a couple green Buttercreams, which were not very good.

In other news, I'm really glad that I was too lazy to cut down my Lemon Zest, which is infested with Bacterial Black Spot.  Somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of the fruit turned out fine this year (last year all were bad).  And the taste is so exquisite that I wonder what I ever saw in other mangos.

I think Ataulfo mangos from the grocery store are often better than other store-bought ones, but yes, home-grown mangos are likely to be much better.

I would add Mulgoba to your list. It has a classic mango taste and an important history.

My timing was way off as far as tasting mangos from my favorite purveyors.  Some too green to mature well (in hindsight). M-4 has been sitting on the piano for six days, may soften eventually.
Another excellent vendor somehow only had Torbet and Duncan the two times I stopped by.

So far the best tasting for me has been the Spirit of '76 from my own tree. Beautiful, and excellent classic Florida mango flavor. For whatever reason the tree has done better the last two years than in earlier times.

I'm waiting on my Peach Cobbler tree. Possibly a few weeks yet, unless they mature at half size.

I agree that Kent can be excellent. I remember that the part near the skin often had a complex tutti frutti flavor that I went crazy for.

Kents can be richly flavored and great.  I've tasted them when they are.   Don't even mention them in the same breath as Tommy Atkins.

I'll probably go ahead and replace the LZ (unless a miracle cure comes along).

Meanwhile this will be the first year I have more than a fruit or two on Peach Cobbler. They are seemingly stuck at half-size, but I'm looking forward to tasting them and freezing for the long cool winter.

For those who have had multiple opportunities to taste these, how would you compare/contrast the flavors?

This was my first year to taste OS, from two sources. To me it did not seem as richly flavored as the Lemon Zest mangos from my tree in the good old days, e.g. last year.  Seemed to lack sparkle.

Could be sampling error, or an off season I guess.  My LZ has leprosy, and I'm wondering whether to replace it with OS.

So if I've had Capri Sun by circumstance at various gatherings in my life, but never once craved it and thought, "I must go out and buy Capri Sun," does this mean I can skip this mango?

The taste is enjoyable, but Yes, you can skip this one. (Unless it turns out to be more productive and more disease-resistant than all the other good mangos.)

My neighbor planted a seed and let both of the sprouts grow until one of them fruited with the clone. Then cut the bad one back.  I don't know if there are disadvantages to this approach, but it worked for him.

I was at a mango talk the other day where the speaker mentioned she has it on good authority (Richard Campbell?) that a reliable way to choose a clone is to choose an sprout that is neither runty nor too vigorous. Obviously you'd need a few to sprout to be able to compare, but it sounded like a reasonable starting point.

So far I'm disappointed in Sugarloaf (n=3). They did not have much flavor at any state.  Perhaps picked too soon?


I had a Cream Brulee from Zill  today. Excellent mango, very sweet and a special resinous taste near the skin.

Based on a sampling of 3 Buttercream mangos that I bought last week, I like it a lot. I would say it has a classic mango flavor, so not unique or spectacular, but pretty good. Also large. I like Guava mango a lot too, because it has a different flavor profile than other varieties. Also remember liking Taralay a lot, but it's been a couple years since I have been able to try one.

In comparison to some other cultivars that I tried for the first time this year, it was easy to eat Buttercream at a stage that tasted good. (I tried Sugarloaf too soon (the flesh was nearly white though kinda soft), Orange Sherbet too late (it was still pretty good).

One other note about Buttercream. The ones I bought had plenty of fungus on the skin, but it did not affect the quality/taste.  (see below)




So how do the guava buttercream and Tara lay taste or compare?
