Tropical Fruit Discussion / +100 passionfruits
« on: January 12, 2013, 07:58:00 PM »
This last few months has produced over 100 passion fruits and counting.  More than I've ever had.  We are eating them out of hand except for the few my 8 yr old used to make delicious cookies (she is a master baker).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mesk: Not looking good
« on: October 06, 2012, 10:27:46 PM »
Elsewhere someone note the comment on ftg site indicated Mesk mango trees are "a bit difficult to manage under tropical conditions".  This seems to contradict the "NO ANTHRACNOSE!" pitch by Dr. Campbell and the "bloom and fruit are tolerant of fungal diseases" comment on the link below.

http://www.fairchildgarden.org/livingcollections/tropicalfruitprogram/Fairchilds17thAnnualInternationalMangoFestival/internationalmangofestival/

Well my 4 plants from seed are all struggling with some leaf disease/abnormality.  I was excited to get these poly seeds up but they look as though they will in fact struggle in humid locations.  Egypt must be much drier.

Pictures later.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion fruit pollination
« on: October 03, 2012, 08:54:40 PM »
I have two varieties of passion fruit climbing in my yard.  Every day between the 6 vines of two types I have 20 - 48 flowers opening.  They are co-mingled so until I noticed a difference in flowers I was just Randomly crossing flowers I promise far apart as possible. Then I discovered two distinct flowers several days already I can see lots of fruit setting.

Do passion flowers set fruit better with two different kinds or several of the same type?  Crossing is easier with identifiable flowers.

And what becomes of seed from crosses?  How does one tell what scientific name applies?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Durian seed
« on: September 24, 2012, 05:08:43 AM »
I have a friend in Malaysia who is planning to send me some durian seed this week.  What are the protocols for this seed?  Should he send it in damp paper towel or dry?  Is it a short viability seed?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Australia in May: Fruits available?
« on: September 11, 2012, 07:47:56 AM »
I have a potential business trip to Australia in May of next year.  I am curious as to if at that time there will be any local produce around.  I did visit in March/April 2011 and found plenty.  If I do go, I will be looking to revisit the beautiful tropics in the north again also.

What is the tropical fruit scene like in Perth?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Breeding Projects
« on: September 05, 2012, 01:10:49 PM »
I am curious as to people's experiences here with breeding projects of any kind related to edible fruits.  I am currently working on stabilizing crosses of heirloom winter squash (technically a fruit) and next year will embark on breeding "winter melons" (both things are summer grown and store well thus eaten in the winter).  Curious as to if folks have participated in any breeding.

Breeding things with long times to fruit could be mission impossible to reach stability but hey...who is to say someone isn't trying.  One of my winter squash selections may take 10 years, maybe longer, to stabalize (as I test them for storage capability that could be up to two years and replant seed from the fruits which make it AND taste good).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Self Storing Tropical Fruits
« on: August 28, 2012, 01:24:22 PM »
I am growing a host of melons that store at room temperature for weeks, if not months.  A very useful trait.  I also grow dozens of "winter squash" for the same reason.  I am wondering what other tropical fruits are out there that store well, no fridge and store beyond several weeks.  I imagine passionfruit fits this category (I never have enough to last that long without eating them...).

Any other suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carabao mango seeds: slow to sprout?
« on: August 25, 2012, 04:41:42 PM »
I have 8 or so of these embryos, wrapped in moist paper towel, since late July.  Not a single one has sprouted.  Nor have they spoiled.  Is this normal?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bermuda's First Jackfruit?

10 years from seed.  My oldest plants are 3.5 yrs old so am happy to see this.  Based on success in Fl, I don't think winter temperatures here are an issue for flowering/fruiting - just time.  We hardly ever get below 58F.  My guess is this tree will fruit even if we have a "cold" winter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beck's Mangoes
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:33:37 PM »
I met a gentleman and his wife who had a table at the FTG Mango Festival this year and were showcasing their soon to be released mango selections.  Beck was the last name if I recall.  Has anyone heard of these folks and their selections before?  Have any?  There was a little one similar to Carabao in size, shape and colour but taste was even better.  I wonder how they will get their material out there...

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Abiu and SE Asian Mango seeds
« on: August 18, 2012, 03:33:24 PM »
Willing to trade for wide array of vegetable seeds or else pay shipping costs (to FL).  I have a helluva a collection of winter squash and tomao varieties.  In addition to any mangoes originating in SE Asia, I am also looking for lemon zest (my one seed turned to mush), orange sherbet, ewais, Mesk and Brahm Kai Mau, Sig Siput.  My one Abiu seed is not looking like it is going to make it either.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mammou Mango
« on: July 27, 2012, 09:55:54 PM »
This was the label from the fruit I bought at Fairchild.  It is a dessert type with a sickly sweet taste.  I don't see any info online from a cursory search.  I wonder what the also known as is for this one.  Anyone heard of or tasted it?  Super thin seed like the Maha Chanok, Nam doc Mai et. al.  It appears to be a south east asian origin based on the traits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Redlands White Sapote?
« on: July 16, 2012, 08:16:37 PM »
Before making he 266 mile trek to north Florida today, I visited pine island nursery for the first time.  They promised me they had a fuyu persimmon in a 3 gallon pot before I left and....I got there and they did not.  They only had a few scraggly looking white sapotes left, Redland and Younghan's.  I knew nothing of either variety.  Based purely on cosmetics, which one looked to be in the least bad shape, I got the Redlands.  A quick glance on this forum suggests - lack of fruiting, lack of appealing taste? - I may have been better off just getting nothing....any comments on Redlands white sapote?

Last year I posted notes on gardenweb regarding my post mango festival feast.  Here I do the same.  Mangoes I bought include:

Carabao
Nam doc Mai (#4 it appears)
Borsha
Step
Martian Pride
Langra Banarsi
Zill
Bullock Heart
Mesk
Mammou
Royal
Brahm Kai Mau
Sig sibut
Pills bury
Beverley
Duncan

This list probably isn't as long as the prior day's feast at Harry's which I will add to that thread later.  In total, I brought 34 mangoes back to my hotel.

So far I've eaten the caraboo.  It was 85% ripe but still good.  Tangy and smooth.  I have quite a few of them as they are alleged to be sweet so took an early plunge.  There were no ivory mangoes availa le this year so caraboo was my make up one.  I focused on south east Asian mangoes where known as these appear to hold more promise for Bermuda than any other.

Will post taste experiences over the next week or two as they ripen.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango in North Florida?
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:40:53 AM »
I am considering buying a grafted tree at Fairchild this weekend to keep in the Lake Mary area.  I will not be around to tend to this tree.  It will be re-potted in a cloth pot, probably 25 gallon.  I do have someone who will water it but I am not expecting them to move it around at the threat of frost.  So, questions:

Should I be concerned about frost killing this tree?
Should I pot this up in a 7 gallon cloth pot for a few months or longer to make it easier to move?
If so, how long until I move up to 25 gallon?
Any other suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Visiting Dominican Republic - advice?
« on: June 14, 2012, 05:38:04 PM »
I will be in the Dominican Republic for 4 days in July for a conference.  The area I am going to be in (punta cana) looks like a tourist trap with a few fruit stands here and there from what I can see online.  Any suggestions from anyone that has been there, done that regarding fresh fruits, nurseries (not that I can buy plants).  I may have half a day to look around.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Stolen banana hand
« on: May 09, 2012, 02:31:15 PM »
So I am harvesting some tomatoes and about to head home from an arable land plot i have.  It comes to mind to check on those bananas, even though I looked at them just this Sunday.

Gone.

A clean cut.

As if they were never there.

First theft from this relatively obscure location (in a quiet neighborhood).  Kiss 40lbs of organic banana goodbye...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to pick firm guava?
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:55:04 PM »
I have my first two fruits on a guava variety grown from seed.  I think it was from hawaii.  Light green and firm when ripe, crunchy.  Any idea when to pick them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Success from Seed
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:19:52 PM »
This is an item to discuss what varieties folks were successful in growing from seed, ideally including time to first harvest and how true, or luckily untrue the fruits produced were.
