I am running out of spots for my plants. There is however one spot where there is now a hideous areca palm half-eaten by fire ants.
As per the subject line, it is quite close to the neighbor's sewer line. + 2 more feet to his water pipe. I thought about a dwarf variety. NDM4 or Rosigold? Any other suggestions apart from these 2 and Pickering (already grows in a different spot)? Cocktail trees also welcome. I was discussing pina colada/sugarloaf in another thread but this might not be so small.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange Sherbet leaf color
« on: December 21, 2021, 01:31:32 PM »
I have just planted my Orange Sherbet that I bought half a year ago from Tropical Acres.
I am wondering if it is normal for this variety to have so light green leaves.
The first picture is OS, the second Excalibur. The difference live is much more visible.
Do you think my OS is healthy? It had 3 flushes this summer. I fertilized it a little while still in a 3-gal pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Free longans :)
« on: July 31, 2021, 10:58:09 PM »
I am not sure if any of you is aware of that. Those of you in West Palm Beach area, you might want to forage for longans. The trees are located on North Shore Drive, vis-a-vis Mangonia Park Tri Rail station. Almost the entire street is lined with them. At least two cultivars. You need telescope fruit picking scissors. The trees are big.
I picked about 8-10 lb.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How do you fight papaya fruit fly?
« on: July 19, 2021, 11:45:55 AM »
So, my first crop of Maradol papayas was infested by papaya fruit fly.
Recently I noticed a big swarm of these hijos de puta.
I googled out that you need to put a plastic bag on fruit to prevent it from infestation.

Google says it is the only way. But... if you do this, when is the right moment?
I put string bags on very small fruits. Won't they get cooked?

I really like papayas and now I started growing other cultivars from seeds from U of Hawaii seed lab and from alohaseeds.com.

What is your experience/success with battling papaya fruit fly?

Neighbor gave me this half full sack of fertilizer. Probably about 10 lb. what would you use it for? I have mangos, avocados, jackfruits, macadamia, guava, pineapple, sour sop, lychee, Barbados cherry, papayas. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I brought this sweetheart lychee in 7gal on Thursday from Excalibur but noticed it has this pest/disease that was discussed in this forum.
I do not remember the name of the pest nor the treatment. I searched but did not find the answer. Please, could you help with the link to the discussion?

What would you advise? I would like to make the plant survive. Anyway, I think they do not allow tree returns at Excalibur.

I appreciate any expert help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is eating my avocado trees?
« on: May 24, 2021, 02:31:16 PM »
Experienced avocado growers, please help.
The pictures below are of brogdon ( darker green) and super hass . Brogdon was planted 1 year ago, super hass 2 years ago. I think both from 3gal containers. They have not grown ever since. The branches look weird, with some black coating. Also a little grey/white coating. Brogdon started sprouting branches in the lower part, but I am pretty sure above the graft line. The trees sprout a lot of buds, as you see in the pictures, but not much results from it. Should I spray sth?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can you help me identify these mangoes?
« on: May 23, 2021, 11:59:30 AM »
Someone in my neighborhood has these 2 mango trees in their front yard. They are consistent heavy producers every year. I am especially curious about the purple fruit. I don’t know if your screen conveys the color. They are literally dark purple, falling even more into the blue end of the purple spectrum.
Dear neighbor, maybe you are reading the forum and can share the name of your cultivars?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What happened to my jackfruit tree?
« on: July 27, 2019, 06:27:56 PM »
Beginner questions again...

I bought this 3 gal mai 3 jackfruit from Excalibur about 2 months ago.
It looked really healthy, lots of leaves.
Now it looks like it is going to die like my previous mai 1 tree.
It started losing leaves probably 1-2 weeks after planting.
I was away this really rainy week and this is what I found after I arrived:

Is it fungus or mold?
Is there any chance for this tree? What should I do?
Jackfruit is my favourite tropical fruit and it looks like I am failing all the time growing it. :'(
Thank you for all advice!

This is my Valencia Pride mango:

It is now about 10 feet tall. Unlike most of you, I want it to be big, it is supposed to be a front yard tree.
But I would like it to grow branches below the current canopy. Is it at all possible? The salesperson at Excalibur said it would grow branches below, but after 3 months I am getting impatient. Should I do some kind of procedure to make it grow branches?

This is my Excalibur mango:

This, on the other hand, I want to keep small. Now the tree is about 5 feet. It is in the backyard and close to electricity lines. But the same thing: it does not look like it is going to grow branches under the current canopy. Any advice?

Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Is this asian citrus psyllid? What to do?
« on: June 20, 2019, 01:12:30 PM »
I have just bought 4 citrus bushes + 1 Eureka lemon.
T

8x zoom.

I found 4 of them on Eureka lemon today. Some more on other bushes.
Is there any hope for the plants? What would you do?
I am a novice and will follow your advice.

Thanks!
