Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaches, Papachi, (Randia echinocarpa)
« on: January 11, 2024, 06:58:52 PM »
I came across an interesting fruit from the north of Mexico call Papaches (Randia echinocarpa) never heard of it before til someone post them on Facebook, they are from all the pacific coast and up to 1000 masl.
So apparently can be grow in different climates, when in season is very sought after and people cut them from the hills and take them to the main cities to sell them, the flavor is very sweet with some bitter notes, and people say the more you eat the bitter is less perceived, I guess something that happens with coffee too, they taste a bit like burn sugar in the flan desert, they are mainly sough after because studies have found them very medicinal against cancer and good for greasy liver, kidneys and other illness, also people put the pulp inside a glass of water for a while and then drink it saying the taste is very refreshing and they can drink water very satisfying after doing this. The fruit itself looks kind of shocking being something like prehistoric shape.
There's a nice video in the link, you can select the English subtitles in the upper right corner of the video

I have a small Lucs in the ground 4 years or so.  It is just below 3 feet tall and is holding its first fruit.

It is a small tree (old, enough to hold fruit, but really small)  and I am surprised it is flowering and holding fruit.  I have others, that are larger and planted about the same time but not doing much right now.

I will post a picture later.
nice, sometimes they can start flowering just at a meter tall, I remember one in Luc's house flowered like crazy, I guess yours is a seedling?

Have seeds of this interesting and very popular fruit from a particu10lar Mexican region and very popular in the markets when in season, they have soft sweet flesh with kind of a delicate delicious pine resine note found in some mangos, the skin is very resistant so they can be transported easily, is usually a small or medium size tree 8/10 feet tall that can be grown in tropical and some temperate weather as they are found around 1200/1700masl. The seed when cracked has flesh like coconut that is why is also know as coquito de cerro (hills Coconut), is very similar to a Spondias.
Price is  1.5 minimum 10 seeds shipping is 9

"A deciduous shrub or small tree that rarely reaches more than 7 m in height, with smooth, grayish, peeling bark, pinnate leaves and small greenish flowers from which plum-sized, yellow-green to orange fruits develop. . They are edible with soft, sweet, slightly acidic pulp and a slightly resinous flavor. Cyrtocarpa procera grows in the dry forests of large parts of Mexico from low elevations to 1800 m, but it is rarely found there and has been cultivated for a long time. The fruit is very popular in Mexico and can be eaten raw or cooked. The soft, dark wood is strongly fragrant."

I'll have shipped early next week a small amount of Koloc, this delicious and very rare fruit from the Mayan lands,
I was told is sweet with notes of sweet pineapple mixed with Guaya melony flavor, I've been informed it can be consumed in two stages that apparently changes the flavor and consistency of the fruit been just ripe or in advance ripening where pulp is naturally detached from the pit, the fruit is large fruits around late Octuber or early November when there's not many fruit around and the tree is moniecious so only one tree is needed.
Price is 7 usd each minimum order is 4 of them, shipping is 9
I'll be receiving early next week, please forgive me if any don't is able to get but I don't have many seeds
Interested please contact me on private message here in the forum, thanks
