Plinia coronata var. Restinga: a precocious coronata variety

I didn't see a thread dedicated to this exciting new introduction into the USA

Apparently this variety is quite precocious when compared to most varieties of coronata, that can take 15yrs...the Restinga variety fruits in about 5-7yr (sometimes even earlier I assume)

I wonder who is going to be the first to fruit this one in the USA? (Or at least on the forum?  Who will have flowers or fruit first?)

I have some trees about 3-4ft tall, but they're still a good 1-3 yr away I'm assuming...

Put a bunch of kelp and jamaican bat guano on it, guarantee you'll be the first with fruit.

looks like his tree is the first to bloom in USA, congrats Ray!

here is the whole tree, in 15 gal pot, about 5 ft tall, Ray said he planted seeds Dec, 5 2012  (so approx 3 yrs from seed to flower?  )

my trees might fruit this year or next!  I have about 10 of them in 15 gal, about 3-4ft tall.

supposedly the fruit is really nice...sweet with a very high pulp to seed ratio, and decent sized fruits...considerably larger than Sabara.

lol..ya I know what u mean...I don't think Ray has giant hands, but his results are not typical...I think it will usually take about 5yr. to fruit from seed...(which is still incredibly fast)...and probably8yr at the longest.

now that I see Ray's tree flowering so early, I'm keeping a few of the largest specimens I was going to sell! 

but i still have some really nice trees to sell (about 20 left?)  I guess they're relatively close to fruiting still...maybe 3-4yr away?

The new book shows slightly over 3cm diameter

It's not the larget coronata variety, but is a large fruit for sure

I heard they tolerate city water very well...but i haven't had a chance to test them for too long...mine were on city water for a good year with no major problems..but I did end up having to drench with chelated Fe once or twice.

haven't noticed any issues with mine and just been watering (when not raining) with the hose without a filter.

Sounds like it will grow fine on its own rootstock but it couldn't hurt to have it on Adams super precocious hybrid rootstock, I mean on Sabara rootstock:)

Here is one of my Restingas with interesting umbrella like shape (when I compare it to other seedlings from same lot) and very compact dense growth. They are 3 y. old and about 2 - 3 ft high. I water all jabos only with rain water because tape water is very calcareous.

haha, I'm keeping about 10 of them in pots, indefinitely in my greenhouse!

I will just keep taking scions from the top, so it doesn't hit the roof!

I have some white jaboticabas and camu camus that are almost touching the 10ft tall roof already!!

I had to cut back the Myrciaria glazioviana very hard already!

Same with Myrciaria vexator, I finally pruned the heck out of it..and it looks really cool now...u can really marvel at the bicolored bark.

Got pics of your pruned blue jabo? I recall it has a really gnarly trunk.

Mike, when you get some branches, about 3mm-5mm caliper that you can donate, you should send some to Josh for grafting onto Sabara, or even Grimal.

I just posted about this on the Jaboholics Anonymous thread, but worth posting here.

I have a Coronata Restinga I got from Adam back in 2017 with a metal tag dated 12-5-12, therefore must be from the same source (Ray/Jabomano).  I've been growing it since then and just potted it up into a 45g.  It has not yet flowered or fruited, but it has a trunk diameter of about 2.5 inches and height w/out pot of about 7ft.

This thread indicates that Ray planted seeds 12-5-12 and the plants had grown to a height of 5ft fruiting trees in 15g about three years later.  This is incredible growth rate for any jaboticaba!  Do we have confirmation that actual fruit were harvested in that timeframe?  Sorry for my skepticism, but based on the fact I have one now in a 45 gallon that still hasn't fruited...

I got one of those restinga also with the metal tag. Mine fruited for the
first time last year and just finished fruiting this year. I put mine in the
ground 2 1/2 years ago. So mine fruited the first time at 8 1/2 years old.
Sometimes I have been told the fruiting times being posted are in Brazil
under perfect conditions and you should add 2-3 years?
Your tree looks great and the fruit is really good. It should be soon.
A few years ago I saw a youtube video of Ray/Jabomano trees. Those
were the nicest trees I have ever seen. I can't find the video now?
I wouldn't be skeptical of anything concerning Ray?

I got two of these from FFF I think about 7/8 years ago. Both were the same 1 gal size when I got.

The bigger one flowered about 3 years ago. Was able to taste the fruit last year and this year. It had ample amount of blooms but very few fruit set.

You’re trees are beautiful!  Do you add anything to your soil or water to adjust for pH or can they take alkaline conditions?  I remember Adam saying that if you prune and expose the branches to sunlight they can fruit faster and better but it does leave the fruits exposed to the birds.
