Lychee Flavored Mango?
« on: January 21, 2022, 09:52:34 AM »
Is anyone familiar with a mango variety with an extremely strong lychee flavor with guava funk? We recently bought a mango from the local Asian supermarket, sold as "Thai Sweet", grown in PR, with a greenish/yellow color. If I had to quantify the flavor profile, it would be 10% indian mango (piney resin?), 20% guava, 70% lychee - wife and I were stunned by how odd (but good) it tasted for a mango.

Really good information I did not know Puerto Rico was exporting Mangos. Good for them. Probably beats the Mexican imports. The mango in question could not be Keitt or can it?   Can you look up to see if the fruit you got as either a Palmer or Parvin?

The PLU code on the sticker suggests it was a Keitt.

People will taste flavors inside a mango sometimes that the next person doesn’t taste at all. It can be pretty subjective stuff.

You're probably right, but what I want to know is how was it possible to still have Keitts???

Off-season crop from spraying Potassium nitrate, which can force bloom at Puerto Rico’s latitude.

Publix has been carrying Atalufo/Champaigne/Honey mangoes this winter, first time I've seen them (it's usually only disgusting Tommy Atkins now). They actually looked pretty good, so (despite my resolution to never buy off-season mangoes) I bought a few. Taste was....yeck, insipid in every way.

I resolve to never buy off-season mangoes, again!

Does not surprise me these are Keitts, especially if they can force a bloom in PR. I have taste some very complex flavors in my Keitt specially if I pick early.

Martexfárms are major  producers. But now they have problems with  the lack of employees. Millenials?
