Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei (Morella/Myrica rubra) thread
« on: March 12, 2022, 05:37:20 PM »
Apparently Cerifera is evergreen in zone 7. My question would be would the grafts survive around here. I will be waiting until I see some life before I consider grafting.
Simon, it looks like you are the Yangmei champion. What type of graft was most successful for you and what was your success rate? Did californica or cerifera have about the same success rate? My nursery has plenty of 3 gal cerifera so I am planning on experimenting later.

302
Just in case East Coasters are planning on trying to graft. Myrica Cerifera seems to be readily available in the Va and NC nursery trade. My local nursery has 3 gals for $25.

Whoa! Those are nice plants. I have been looking for one of rhe "black" varieties. Those prices are great for trees that size.

I think Ong is San Diego is supposed to stock many varieties of these fruits.

88
Yeah. It's gotta be 88. Eighty eight it is. I'm pretty sure it's 88. I just asked my the guy across the street and he assures me it's 88 ;)

Anybody worried that this is Root Knot Nematode infested????

This is the stuff that gives me anxiety.

Is this nodules with the nitrogen fixing bacteria that they're talking about since yangmei trees can fix nitrogen? Or are they the root knot nematodes? Any confirmation on that from USDA during inspection?

Many people assumed that they were the Frankia bacteria that we know is associated with Yangmei.

BAD NEWS: They are indeed ROOT KNOT NEMATODES

3 species were identified (incognita, hapla, javanica). This was confirmed by the inspection station.
This means what? Is it something to be concerned about or is just something that goes along with the plants in normal habitat? Should we treat for it later?

My trees arrived today. I will be going with a combo of peat, Coast of Maine mix and Pearlite. All of this presoaked in rainwater. No Humidity tent until tomorrow. Mine don't look green at all to be honest so I assume they are dormant. My question is how is dormancy initiated since all I have read is that yangmei is supposed to be evergreen?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Tree in St. Augustine
« on: March 10, 2022, 09:01:56 AM »
I recently went on a trip to St. Augustine and was surprised to see this mature mango tree growing on the side of our hotel. I was even more impressed that it didn’t seem to be affected by the late Jan. cold snap and that it had flowers and tiny fruit forming. Does anyone know of any in-ground mangos further north than this?

Just looking at the picture, that mango has a lot of advantages. Big building and asphalt parking lot to throw off a lot of heat. I think St. Augustine might be close enough to the ocean to get some benefit too. The questionwould ve how far inlad at that lattide would a mango be successful.

All the shipments were made before 10 am pacific time.
I will send out the receipt for thanking.

Thank you all for the great support, and special thanks to
Amy, Joseph, Jeremy, Jozeph, Nate for all the hard work.

It’s not too  bad about this second group buy. The trees were shipped
on 3/1, and got released on 3/7. It took 6 days. Although there were some
hiccups in the USDA, were held there  over  the weekend. It’s totally
understandable. Since the trees were nicely
wrapped, they wee still good condition.
Reciept by email or PM?
Bravo on shipping today BTW. I was expecting the shipping would be tomorrow. I can't wait to see my babies.

309
What's it supposed to do?

310
Should be fine, if temps are not too high and they don't dry out.

...always expect some loss when doing risky order as such. All should not be lost.

I've had live coral (sps and lps) sit in a box at the post office over the weekend, and survive upon acclimation.
Do you have any idea of how many of us are on the East Coast? I mean those of us who are getting plants shipped.
If anybody who ordered from the East Coast is reading this, what do you guys think about starting an East Coast thread for discussing the specific progress of trees. I'm in 7a/b inland so I suspect I'm in one of the cooler areas. I plan on dong the whole wrap in tape and tent protocol. Whenever I can get stable 70 plus in the unheated greenhouse it's all going outside.

I don't know, less than 69?

I know I'm late on this thread but have you considered a Bumper? I have one and I think it tastes pretty good and it really produces.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wholesale tropical nurseries?
« on: March 04, 2022, 11:29:10 PM »
I doubt there is any true tropical trees wholesalers in California or elsewhere beside Florida. And even Florida, if the "wholesaler" is not around Miami, be careful. Southern tip of Florida has tropical climate even though technically it's not in a tropical zone.

Yes like kh0110 says, most nurseries out west get trucks from FL
You both beat me to it.

314
Dang Bureaucrats overachieveing!
It happens.
Bill,
Assuming Tuesday pickup, when will shipping begin?

Hello looking for recommendations for nurseries which sell wholesale. Preferably in California but open to other recommendations as well. Thanks in advance
Clarify by what you mean by wholesale? Do you mean you will buy 5 trees or 20 trees or do you want the wholesale price for buying two mango trees, one banana tree, 3 guava trees, a canistel, and two apple trees?

3 out of 8 grafted I did are putting out.

whats my screen size
Thanks for the pics. What was your media again? Are those slow release pellets? It looks like you have some branches completely wrapped and some with just the tips.

Putting out?  :o Ok, maybe it's my age. I used to take girls on dates hoping they would "put out". Never thought about plants though. ;D ;D ;D ;D

It was fun to see the collection of trees at Ong's this past weekend.  I was somewhat interested in Jambu (Wax Apple) and Guava for which they seem well stocked.
Some brief questions for the group:
  1) Tropical Guava:  What are your favorites among the vast selection they have?   (I'm most interested in Asian Guava varieties and not Lemon, Strawberry, or Feijoa)
  2) Wax Apple:  Of the varieties you've seen, which seem most flavorful or sweet?
  3) Mango trees: I got an offhand answer from an attendant that they grow them on Manila rootstock but some carried Florida type labels-- any impressions from those who have bought these and tried them?

Thanks

Tom
What were the prices like? How do they compare to Mimosa or Exotica?

The tape prevents desiccation or drying up while the tree recovers. I have many trees and have used tape but now I use a greenhouse or tent with a humidifier to control the humidity.

Simon
Does your light recommendation vary for either situation i.e. with tape in a tent or greenhouse? For example in a grow tent the light can be controlled very precisely and so can the humidity but in a clear plastic bag tent it would be somewhat different. The light in a grow tent might have a drying effect because of airflow whereas a plastic bag  might not.
BTW
I appreciate you letting me pick your brain.

You can wrap the whole tree in parafilm or Buddytape except the area next to the soil. I would leave 1-2 inches away from the soil that is not covered because the skin/bark can wick moisture and you don’t want moisture getting under the film.

Also, before you wrap, make sure the scions/branches are dry. If you wrap moist branches, you can get mold unless you treated with a fungicide.

If you do wrap most of your tree, you have to keep an eye out for mold beneath the parafilm or Buddytape.

Simon
So,
The tape keeps the moisture in until the buds swell? Did you keep yours in a humidity tent or just in a humid area?

I will be driving up there to pick something else up so I plan to pick up Jozephs, Kevin’s & my order.
Do you have the estimated day now so I can head up the night before? I know it can be delayed for inspection.
I'm basically looking for the same. Hoping to save a few bucks on travel. There's about $100 difference every week that I plan the trip earlier. Currently, I am expecting to leave Friday 🙏 but Tuesday would be alright for me.The important thing for me is to get the trees as soon as they come out of inspection.

Thanks Bill.

Recommendations so far:

1. Humidity:                High Humidity
2. Temp:                     Warm temperatures at or around 70 degrees F for soil temps
3. Planting medium:     Spagnum
4. Pot size:                  3 gal
5. Watering regime:      Allow plants to dry between watering

Anybody else who has had some success feel free to chime in.

I'm going to give this thread a bump. I am still tryng to figure out what the best way to get success. So far it seems agrees upon that high humidity is a factor for success.
1. High Humidity
2. Warm temperatures at or around 70 degrees F for soil temps
3. Planting medium???
4. Pot size???
5. Watering regime??!

Anybody who wants to add to the list you are welcome. :)

What kind of food are you into? Are you flying back out of SF the next day?
Campbell is boring strip mall USA and a little less than an hour south of SF. You could find good food around there .
SF is a beautiful city with lots of great places to hang out and kill some time. And lots of great food options. Just depends the logistics of your coming and going and what makes sense without stressing on time.

Ok, fellows. Where is the best place to get some grub and relax for 10 hrs after I get to San Francisco, drive to Campbell and pick up mu trees? Any local specialties I should look for? I don't drink so that is not really on the menu. Any help will be appreciated.
To be honest I like just about every type of cuisine. The only thing I don't eat is pork or cheese. They both give me headaches. Other than that I'm in. I will be there after 3pm. I wont be in Campbell until 5. If Bill is so gracious to let me pick up the trees then. After that, it's back to San Francisco.
