I am not in SoCal but my longans are doing great this year.
On the pics there are two trees in one hole.
A Sri Chompoo and a Haew seedling. The brown longans are from this last and the greener from the grafted Sri chompoo
i began to harvest them last week. They are sweet and aromatic.
...

Where approximately in France are you to be able to grow longan in ground outdoor?

Ashok and his wife were great hosts, as always. I actually had LaHabra Sorbete as #1, Orange Sherbet as #2, and Venus as #3.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Leaf Deficiency on Langsat.

The only sure way I know is what you already put in place, sulfur pellets. Maybe add more of it and less watering which could wash away the sulfur (?).
Another thing I could think of would be to spray something like this "Fertilome (10630) Chelated Liquid Iron and Other Micronutrients", if lowering pH is too hard. I use this for drenching but spray should do as well.

Not sure but a pH of 6.8 could be on the higher end for Langsat. I believe where it originates, the pH is around 6 on average.

Yellowing of leaves with green veins could be iron deficiency and/or high soil pH. If on top of this yellowing, the leaves are also smaller than normal then it could also be a zinc deficiency. I would check soil pH first.

This one works very well for me but you need to buy the pole though. I bought a telescopic pole for pool cleaning one at Lowes

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Problem grafting PPC atemoyas
« on: April 27, 2023, 10:41:38 PM »
This is not a question of rootstock. When an Annona graft pushes in less than a week, it means the graft has failed. And the failure is due to one or more of below:
  • Cambium not matching
  • The cut on scion and/or rootstock is not straight and flat
  • Scion is not "sufficiently" fresh
  • Bad timing
  • ...
The usual culprit is the cambium not matching for whatever reason.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB BLUE JAVA BANANA PLANTS
« on: April 01, 2023, 08:57:39 PM »
FWIW, blue java is not very high on my list of bananas I've tried.

The ones I've had were really pasty mouth feel and more of a chore to eat than anything.

Seems more of a novelty fruit imo.

If you want tasty I'd look elsewhere, personally.

This banana is also AKA Ice Cream Banana. Meaning, if you eat it ice cold, it's like ice cream. But if you eat it room temperature, Potato Man is correct, you either hate it or like it. Not sure about love it. :)
Also, get ready to prop it when fruits appear.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Identity of mango in Singapore?
« on: March 28, 2023, 06:58:58 PM »
I don't think seeds are necessarily a big deal taking back to CA, they sell them in certain airports even.  They are looking more for pests, fruit, or blacklisted/invasive species I think.

For mango, the USDA's concern is actually the seeds and not the plant because it could harbor a certain borer type of insect. I forgot what that was, it was a long time ago when I applied for a permit to import tropical plants.

« on: February 03, 2023, 05:42:56 PM »
Iffy, There are 2 kinds of papaya tastes, one with the puke aftertaste and one without. You might need to find out which one your friend's mother likes. Most of them have the puke aftertaste. The Hawaiian sunset/sunrise don't and those are the ones I could eat. :)
