Sugar Apple: extend season by picking off early flowers?
« on: September 24, 2021, 03:48:15 PM »
I want to extend the fruiting season of my Sugar Apple (Annona Squamosa). If A.) I pick off half of the early flowers, or B.) I neglect to hand pollinate them, will it produce more late flowers/fruits?  I have a couple of late fruits and I want more fruits to be late fruits.  Thanks!

How long do you want to extend the season?
I have seen later sugar apples turn grey and not ripen when
the temps are cooler but last year I had some Na Dais that
ripened in January. I didn't do anything special and don't
hand pollinate my sugar apples. The flavor was washed out
but I was happy to have them in January. The tree had it's
usual fruit around August. My custard apple's fruit ripened in March
and the cherilata is suppose to ripen from January to March
It may be easier to add other annonas for an extended season?

The longer you can get the tree to keep the prior year's leaves, the later it will fruit. The opposite is also true. Manual defoliation will cause the tree to bloom earlier.
