Tree was gifted to me by my buddy and forum member acoff88 in 2017.
Was potted until 1 year ago.

I was shocked and stoked to see Lots of flowers this morning.

Anyone else growing garcinia intermedia in Miami area or in south Florida that can tell me how long flower to fruit and if I need to bag them or if critters and pests leave them alone usually??

Thanks

Abe

I do not bag at all I just fertilize and water occasionally and they're GTG. I have yet to see pests of any kind on mine. After growing fruit 12+ years, I learned it's best to ignore the bloom to fruit cycle, so I forget mine until fruit starts to drop. Be aware that the seeds from dropped fruit will grow into a little tree forest really fast so policing the fallen fruit off the soil is necessary.

Oh, the dead wood cuttings make GR8 tinder / kindling wood for a fireplace, chiminea or fire pit. It burn hot, and turns to red coals while most other kindling goes from flame straight to ash.

During the warmer months of the year, I have noted that something (fruit fly, wasp?) punctures the skin and there may be larvae inside. Easy to spot the brown/black puncture spots on the yellow/orange skin. Fruit still tastes good.

Fruit guy, how many crops do you get out of your tree and what time(s) of the year?

Gets better and better year after year. Ours delivers at least 2, maybe 3 crops a year. Mostly shaded and still produces

Honest Abe,

There is usually some fruit on the trees most of the year. The largest crops occur starting in Spring (the trees are loaded with flowers now) and are fairly continuously flowering or fruiting (or both) until the Fall. I have 3 trees, all about 20 years old.

Thanks for responses. Fruit guy, that’s a very nice collection. Sounds like a great tree to have around for almost year-round snacking. I wasn’t aware they were that productive. That’s great news thanks so much.

I noticed you have a banana right next to where you have the small tree.  The bananas are very vigorous and can take over where the small tree is.

Julie, I planned that so the bananas would shade the lemon drop…I was under the impression they do better in shade/partial shade/

Do they like full sun?

Mine is in full shade under several mature live oaks, and is 12 feet tall and produces fruit 6-8 months out of the year.  I'm 15 minutes west of Orlando, in Winter Garden/Ocoee and winter temps haven't affected it all.  Each year the crop load gets larger, and the fruit also gets insect probing, but no larva in the fruit so far.
