ISO: Pandanus conoideus
« on: June 05, 2023, 05:20:07 AM »
The red part of the fruit is used to make a paste or sauce.
I have tried the sauce and I like it.

Anyone in Australia have plants or seeds??
Would like to barter or buy.
Would love to grow it and make my own sauce.
Must be really nutritious also.

I know there is someone in Bundaberg area but unfortunetly I lost the contact details that I got at the last Rare fruit AGM. :(

This fruit ahould be grown more here in AU!

I have seen a few amazing Australian native Pandanus fruit in FNQLD, but this one is even more so.
Have you tried reaching out to the PNG community in Cairns, they always had interesting vegetables at the markets when I was up there.
I hear the market scene has changed a lot nowadays, so may not be as easy as before.
Certainly hope you can track it down.

Every time I go to Rustys I look for it, have never seen it. Have asked them for that, galip, pili etc but the women I ask don’t know. Most of the time theres areca, pepper vine and sprouted coconut and peanuts. There’s still a few “islander” stalls but most are run by the asian community if I am not wrong and the produce is almost identical in every stall from them.
I wish so much that they started selling some of the great stuff from PNG.

Someone told me that “png people” keep it to themselves but idk if that is true. The basis of the accusation was that they don’t want the stuff to get commercialised. But this is jsut rumour I guess.
Maybe have to go to some png community centre and see if there is anyone whos into gardening there.

That pandanus must be here! Surely!
I makes a great sauce to go with Breadfruit or Taro!
