F2 Citrandarin (X-639) winter hardiness trial

Taking inspiration from Kumin, I am starting my own F2 trial in Zone 6b.

Lyn citrus seed has X-639 seed available, which is a Citrandarin with Cleopatra mandarin parentage. This is similar to US 1281 and 1282. My thought is to buy ~8,000 seed to start under low tunnels in the spring. This should hopefully give me ~800-1600 zygotic seedlings that I will expose to our winter temps. My hope is that, due to the mandarin parentage, I will see a somewhat larger percent survival rate than Kumin did with his citranges. But time will tell.

My goals are pretty small with this project - I'm really just looking for a slightly improved trifoliate orange. I hope to use it as a learning experience that could be applied to other, more long-term projects that would involve poncirus+ (if I can get a hold of it!).

Any advice/thoughts are appreciated! I intend to update this thread as things progress.

This is the way! Good luck!!

What method will you use to discriminate between zygotic and nucellar seedlings?

X639 should not be hardy enough to survive in Pennsylvania, I would think, and so selection would kill the nucellar seedlings?

Ah ok, that makes sense. Very nice!
