This sweet fruit is cultivated in mountains
We call it bangi as it splits when fully ripe.

We have the same fruit in Kerala, but it is lighter in colour. As far as I know it is a hybrid of cucumber and pumpkin. When we use cucumber seeds from the last crop, grown in a field of cucumbers and pumpkins, many a time, one of the vines produce this fruit!!!

It is not hybrid between cucumber and pumpkin. In my childhood I used to see that indigenous people were selling these fruits carefully covered with newspaper as the fruits were split;they were juicy and sweet.I used to like that fruit from a vine which was allowed to spread on river bed. This time I remembered this fruit and asked my friend to get some seeds for me.I do not know what is exact species but I believed it to be Cucumis melo var momordica or a related species. The season is almost over. The ripe fruit can be used to make refreshing drink.
Thank you Chandramohan and Richard
