Tejocote, cold tolerance and more
SpeciesOfSubstance:
7a/7b/8a here. Currently cold stratifying seed, but eager to see how they handle in the outdoors soon. I’ll let you know what I find out!
vnomonee:
My seeds never came up. I wonder if the imported fruit is irradiated. Also thuja occidentalis isn't a host for the rust but we still get it here from the cedars in town
JSea:
Tejocote is very difficult to germinate. I've tried with a lot of fresh seed, and not a single sprout. It seems double cold stratification is not enough, they require scarification too.
UnicornEmily:
I had no idea hawthorns and medlars were crossable. How fascinating!
Would you like some seeds of thornless cockspur hawthorn (Crataegus crus-galli var. inermis)? I have a bunch I have gathered from several landscape trees in my area. If you don't have any of those yet, maybe those would be nice to have to add to your breeding program. The fruits are nice enough (they taste like apples), and thornlessness is a nice trait.
D-Grower:
I'd be into buying some medlar seeds or seedlings if anyone out there has them.
