Citrus > Cold Hardy Citrus
My first citrus grafts
(1/1)
Browndrake:
Over the last couple months, I've been getting into the cold hardy citrus game. I'd really like to get dessert quality citrus that will survive without protection down to 5° F. 0° would be better. I've been gathering various cultivars to start with and working with state regulators to get more into Arizona. It's a slow process.
I haven't done much grafting and previously had only done stone fruits and pears. It is always exciting to see grafts take and new life take off. Kumin was kind enough to help me with some scionwood and I have a couple new trees joining the team.
These are Conestoga 10 and Conestoga 26.

Congrats on the grafts. If you can get a Prague Chimera that would be great- satsuma fruit on a very hardy tree.

Welcome to the hardy citrus game, and nice grafts! Check out this post if you haven't already: https://themulberries.org/citrus-fruit-rating-vs-cold-hardiness/
I compiled the taste test and hardiness data I was able to collect on several hardy citrus varieties. Down to 0F, Prague and Bishop are your best choices, but Bishop isn't quite dessert quality. Down to 5F, Thomasville, IVA Swingle, Morton, US-1279 Yuzu, Taiwanica, and Carolina Lime are all pretty good, though some make a better juice than fresh eating.

I wouldn't mind getting a Chimera. However, my main goal is to help develop some new varieties.
With a little bit of protection I can already grow satauma Mandari. We are a true 8A, I think. We did get down to 10.8° f for a few minutes this winter.
I think that I'm more concerned about the many warm days during winter than I am our ultimate cold level. We only have 15 days that didn't hit 60° this year. We only had one day and it didn't hit 40° this year.
Although I read all the historical data here it's not the same as measuring my own, especially in my own microclimate.
This will be a roll of the punches type of deal and ajust as necessary.
Mulberry, I have read most of the things you have posted on your web page. Really appreciate you testing and sharing data.
