Did some searching on this Forum and seen Kathy was a Zill release!!! Um Kryptonite is definitely a better name for it by far, much better branding as Kathy just sounds incredibly boring for a outstanding Mango... but that wasn't for Dr. Cambell to rename.

Tried 4 mangos from my assorted box from Mangomen. The first to ripen were Kryptonite, Fairchild, Maha, and CC. I can say this that season is much better than last years washed out season in my opinion. Of the 4 Mangos I tried today, Kryptonite left them all in the dust!

-CC is just sweet coconut if that's what you're into it

-Maha tasted similar to other Asian Mangos like Nam Dac Mai but with it's own twist of complexity to add to it's sweetness (concentrated honey sweet nam Doc mai is much better IMO)

-Fairchild...average sweet tasting mango with a mild resin flavor

-Kryptonite!!! Easily a top tier Mango in my opinion. I put up it there with LZ and Sweet Tart which are my favorite. This Mango has a delicious sugary sweet flavor with a much milder tart kick than the infamous "Sweet Tart"...reminds me of a sweet tart light except this variety comes with resionous/piney addition, but not over whelming like a carrie mango per say....also this is a pretty nice size mango as well....definitely a well rounded cultivar that I'll be looking to plant one day when I retire from the Navy.

Side note:  seems like everything being developed these days is a mandarin.
That's because oranges are typically much harder to develop new varieties because almost all of their seeds are nucellar.

That and I may be biased, but I think mandarins like the infamous "cuties" are more marketable for all ages than oranges. And in my opinion, There isn't an orange out there that can stand toe to toe with a  tango, Gold nugget, or kishu mandarin!!!

Hope you guys made it ok, I survived 2 winters in Temecula CA with Temps dipping down to 26.... I survived by frost cloth and Christmas lights!

Check out Several members there have fig farms in yes certain varieties do extremely well there.

Sweet Tart had the best and most intense flavor out of everything I tried this year, However Dr. Cambell's CiciLove was easily the second best Mango wiping the floor with the Washed out Lemon Zest, OK Coco Cream, decent orange Sherbert, and few others not worth mentioning. It has a really good sweetness to it, slight acidity, and mild spice to it.... Great mango!

A few Sweet Tarts from Dr. Cambell were off the charts!!!!!!! Definitely an incredible Mango that will punch you in the face with mouth popping flavor.

In selecting a new mango cultivar, there are a number of selection criteria that one uses to arrive at a top pick (in no particular order):
  • Disease resistance
  • Production (and crop consistency)
  • Compact growth habit / ease of maintenance
  • Flavor, texture, and scent
  • (other characteristics that are important to commercial producers -- such as shelf life, size, color, etc)
The problem is that finding a mango with high marks in all of the above is akin to finding a spouse who is strikingly attractive, genius-level smart, never gets mad nor complains, earns a 7-figure salary, never falls ill nor never gets fat, and will live to be 120 -- such a person likely does not exist.

So one will select based on the subset of criteria that they consider most important. Dr Richard Campbell tends to focus on disease resistance, production, and maintainability over flavor, where Gary Zill puts a little more emphasis on flavor. So, the mangoes that each promotes are a reflection of this.

I consider flavor and texture to be a non-negotiable trait and will gladly trade a little less production and disease resistance to get it. The majority of my mango trees are therefore Zill selections :D.

When you taste a mouth popping ultra sweet sour patch kids Mango with coco cola fizz fusion blended called Sweet Tart... I would take 10 mango production over something that was prolific!!!!!! Thank the Mango Gods for Zill!!!

We all hear about Zill Mangos which is well warranted as the Zill's have a Catalogue of God tier level Varieties.

What about the other Cultivars being released or released recently in the last few years? I mean Dr. Cambell has numerous of Mangos for sale that I've never even heard mentioned here... I wanted to try a few, but the price of boxes is to much to gamble on a blind buy.

ST is probably my #1 fav mango at the moment. But, I'm a little surprised that yours had jelly seed. I don't think I've ever seen a ST with jelly seed before.

I have seen more jelly seed than usual this year, and the early LZ and coco cream were indeed bland. LZ normally starts to ripen in July, so a June LZ would be really early and understandably bland.

The vast majority of my coco cream crop, though, has been outstanding. Rob had suggested that coco cream needs a few years before it starts showing what it's capable of, and my trees have finally started strutting their stuff. I had a huge crop of really delicious mangoes. It is certainly not an in-your-face, intense mango flavor like ST or pina colada. However, the flavor is very smooth and pleasing with a complexity of flavors ranging from pina colada to citrus to coconut.

PS -- Carrie is not a shipping mango. For one, it bruises ridiculously easily. Secondly, it is not very good when fully ripe. The carrie should probably never be shipped unless the shipping time can be confined to a day or two and the mango can be wrapped in a way that completely prevents damage to due brute mail workers chucking parcels around.
Yes the Carrie's were extremely bruised, the Sweet Tart i ate was also bruised a little, I'm not sure but maybe that effected the internal breakdown/jelly seed... So Sweet Tarts shelf life is a major plus for shipping? Any other elite tier mango's with great shipping?

So after tasting a few boxes from Dr. Cambell and SqaumÖ I was a bit disappointed, especially after tasting the world renowned Lemon Zest and popular Coco cream.... well those 2 could barely beat a Tommy Atkins in the form I ate them in...Just extremely washed out flavor and bland, most varieties I tried full of jelly seed as well except LZ. Now of course this is most likely to blame because of the early and rainy Mango Season.

Well the box that came in today was from DR. Cambell full of Sweet Tarts and Carries... Unfortunately All 6 carries are extremely over ripe and mushy! however the Sweet Tarts arrived just fine and 2 with ok ripeness. Well decided to cut my first Sweet tart open... literally half of the Mango was jelly seed. right off the bat I thought deja vu all over again with a jelly seed washed out flavor.... Well the first bite around outside of the jelly seed, was a bite that literally punched me in the mouth, stopped chew mid stride, and had me stuck for a moment marveling at this GOD DMAN GREATNESS!!! Ultra level sweetness mixed with sour patch kids candy sour.... literally a Euphoric experience!!!

I can't wait until the day when I retire from the Navy and get back to my Southern Ca home and Plant 2 of these.... JF can I give you a 4 years heads up and deposit to me 2 trees started so I can a 15 gallon ready for the ground? I know my Lemon Zest I tried were washed out, but I just can't see something tasting better than Sweet Tart Mango... That sweetness and acidity is just amazing, also tasted some mild complexity nuances in there somewhere near the skin as well. All in All the Florida Mango hype is real!!!! especially SWEET TART.

Watermelon is enhanced by squeezing lime juice over it. Ate it this way yesterday.

Zands you ever ate a top tier watermelon such as orangeglo or gold in gold, or any for that  matter? They're good as is!!!! grocery store garbage gets the lime and tajin added which is really good.

From my tree in California, it was extremely sweet, like  ultra candy sweet, but had an extremely mild spice and acidity complex to it which made it an incredible mango for me.

They like Mediterranean (dry ) climate , not humid climate

Not so sure about that.... Check out and you'll find Fig lovers growing figs in all kinds of regions, especially tropical. Thailand has a bunch of ourfigs members doing extremely well.

I hope you soon get orders back to California. With respect to Florida mangos I can tell you from my personal experience that they are some of the best mangos Iíve ever had. California produces beautiful unblemished flavorful fruits but so does Florida. Since you are close to Miami you should take a vacation down there and visit some of the nurseries in early July ...... you wonít be disappointed.

Frank I dream of the day when i get transferred or retire back to Southern Ca.... Ether stay in my Temecula home, or sell it and buy a ranch in Fallbrook or De luz.... One way or another I'll be back growing my first love, Mangos and cherimoyas... for now I'm growing top tier Figs which are actually amazing if I might add.

ClayMango, I am a mango newbie when it comes to all the varieties grown here in FL. I'm still tasting my way through as many as I can while trying to decide what I want to plant. Nam Doc Mai was on my list to grow until I tasted it last year. The fruit I bought was so sweet, I found it unbearable. I could probably stomach it in a smoothie or milkshake but definitely can't eat it as is.  I am going to try some again this summer before I make the final decision on whether it is worth growing for me.

Yep, that description reminds me of the sugar bomb Nam Doc Mai I had which was incredible o my palate... However it also had some nice nuances of spice and acidity.

Bumping this... should we have any concerns with the predicted 8 or so inches of rain over the next couple days ..with mangoes a couple weeks from harvest ready ?

So far my FL mangoes havenít been close to noteworthy.  LZ from MangoMen was amazingly bland.  Picked early?  Rain? Both?  I donít think I can bring myself to eat another one. Definitely donít want to share and given others such a bad impression. PPK has been Ďokí. Itís such a good Mango even washed out its tastes ok. Dupuis Saigon from Squam was also among the better fruit.

Has anyone ever compared the 2 regions? Since being transferred to Norfolk, Va in the Navy, I've started purchasing Mango Boxes from South Florida growers.

Although many factors come into play such as rain, fertilization, temperature, time of the season, age of the tree etc, so I've had Nam Doc Mai, Edward, Coconut Cream, Sweet tart, and Lemon zest from South Florida and not one mango from any of those boxes have even come close to ripened Nam Doc Mai from my old tree in California.... The Brix, flavor profile, texture... everything is just on a whole another level.

I've often heard on here of how bland Nam Doc Mai is... Well the ones from Florida were exactly that, extremely bland and washed out with mild sweetness... While the Nam Dac Mai from my tree in California was like pure sugar Candy in Mango form with extremely mild complexity of acidity and spice. That Nam Dac Mai has remained my baseline for Mangos as it's wiped the floor with everything I've had from Florida. Again might I add, this may be a bad season for Mangos, maybe too much rain, too early in the season, young tree, picked too green... lots of factors here folks...however so far it appears that California may have better growing conditions than South Florida to produce high quality Mangos.

Purchased over 14 mango trees from TT. nothing but good experiences, they reimbursed me for one tree which was the wrong size and customer service was great with getting special orders in for trees they don't carry on their website or those that our out of stock.

I don't recall ever a dating Burton. Looks like a nice fruit though. Good size, nice shape and sounds like high Brix? Does it have good acidity?

My holy grail of cherimoya is a fruit with good sweetness, juicy, large fruit with few seeds and most importantly, very high acidity!


Simon what moya has captured this taste for you so far? The best one I tried to date came from an Asian Market of all places with amazing sweetness and high acidity which was mouth popping Lemon sweetness which kinda of took over the typical cherimoya flavors... Besides that rogue un-named moya, I say El Bumpo is King.
