Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Let's Boost My Grafting Confidence!
« on: May 14, 2020, 04:51:21 PM »
Guava is like mission impossible for me.  Stone fruits can be done blindfolded.
I will try 2 or 3 guava trees on very protected spots... maby you could do the same.  :)

Maybe grafted to a seedling may increase the success rate which I have not yet try.  I am grow seedlings and hope they are ready next year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / dechlorinated water for jaboticaba
« on: May 14, 2020, 02:04:36 PM »
Hi,

I used this method to dechlorinated water for the jaboticaba tree.  using the sun and added lemon to dechlorinated the water.  Do you think this method will work?

Added lemon to lower the PH in the water and have the container close to the tree to create a mist environment

Soft wood like Pear, apple and Annona have higher rate than hard wood.  I have difficulty with guava, my success rate is only 10%.

My wife spotted this while I have my saw on that trunk.
From my experience this is the best way how to convince citrus seedlings to flower ;D

Got it, I will make sure I walk around my yard with a  saw in my hand every week.  😄🤭

Talk to Kaz

Agree, Kaz username is sc4001992 in case you didn't know.

Is there really an Inga in a cramped yard?

I'd like to see how well it copes with the tight quarters treatment.

Don't know, just wait and see.  I don't expect it is very good for the first and only one crop.

There are almost no reasons to prune a young citrus tree.  Congratulations to you and this tree.  As it is said, "Good things come to those who wait".

Thanks Millet, I pruned it because some of the branches are blocking my driveway.  I had been trying to keep them as long as I could and I have to wiggling around to get out from the car when I parked there.

I bought a gaint tree from them. Very bad experience. I received a plant very weak with no leaves. It is dead. Never do business with them again.

That is bad.  Did you got your refund?

659
OMG, I thought it won't bear fruit this year, so I pruned it today to grow stronger trunk and hope it will bear fruit next year.  My wife spotted this while I have my saw on that trunk.  I almost trim it down.  I am so happy to see it after many years of growing.

Only one......

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Fruit/Seeds for sale

Received my seeds today, nice packaged, and thank you for the extra.  Very helpful, and well respect seller.

663
I mixed potting soil with compost.  I mixed compost with soil when I plant tree to ground

664
Mulberry is very easy to root from cutting.  Just buy couple scions from the member and root them.  You should get some fruit very soon.

Nice seeds and thx for the extra.

Sapodilla seedlings are annoyingly slow.

True, my in-law has 2 sapodilla started from seeds.  Took over 12 years before flowering.

The tree is huge, and bear a lot fruit each year.

667
I have some if you would like one.

Cheers,
Richard

How old is your tree?

668
Why? What does it taste like? There is large Ginkgo’s planted as street tree’s here and I have never thought of them for fruit.
I highly recommend Ginkgo tree.  Very very slow grow.

It is not the outter lay to eat.  Eat the nut inside the shell.  Of course, cook before eat.  I put some of them when I make soup or dessert.  That is a lot of nutrition.

Google "ginkgo dessert recipe", you will a lot of nutrition info and recipe for it.

It take up to 30 years before bear fruit.  Extremely slow grow.  "Your grow the tree and your grandson pick the fruit." A phrase in Chinese describe how slow the tree is growing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is the jaboticaba tree flowering?
« on: May 05, 2020, 08:24:34 PM »
I am new to grow jaboticaba, I saw some bumps pop up in the trunk of the jaboticaba tree today.  Is it starting to flower or to early to determine?  Thanks....

670
I highly recommend Ginkgo tree.

I have one of these in a 3 gallon pot. Nice fall colors and you can make a tea with the leaves, but it's not exactly know for it's fruit... Here is a description I found online, "All agree the aroma is unpleasant but to what degree depends upon the person – some describing it as ripe camembert cheese or rancid butter, and others comparing it more to dog feces or vomit."  ;D

As I am getting older I started to like it, I hated it when I were young.

671
If it is red, I should get some fruit pretty soon with it.  Sabara takes longer time than red to fruit.  If this tree is 8 years old, I can get some fruit next year.  Finger crossed.  😄😄

672
I highly recommend Ginkgo tree.  Very very slow grow.

673
Nice looking tree - I just bought some similar ones from Champa. Almost everything you see here in jabo form is Sabara. Those are certainly the same.

How much did you pay if you don't mind my asking?

I bought a 3 gallon for $60 and a 15 gallon for $120 just now.

I brought 2, 7gal is 90 and 15gal is 120.  The 7 gal trunk is 3.5in and the 15gal 4in.  If I understand correctly, the 7gal is 7 years old and the 15 is 8 years old tree.

674
Stuff you get from local nurseries like mimosa is usually Sabara variety.

Thanks sosamo.

I got couple of pomelo/grapefruit from one of my friend.  It is semi firm, very juicy, very strong flavor and not to acid.
