I too would like some. Bought some from tradewindfruits a few years ago (along with a ton of other seeds  ;D ), but alas the cape's were the only ones that didnt grow. :( I would be skeptical of how fresh rarepalmseed's cape wild persimmon seeds are - at least IMHO.

Though I havent seed them for sale anywhere else save facebook marketplace once from a local collector. But he never got back to me. Sadly. (Probably for the best as they were expensive too lol).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Baby cacao needs some help.
« on: June 19, 2020, 11:52:33 PM »

My baby cacao isn't very happy, as you can see in the pic. Any ideas what's wrong ? (It's currently being grown with a grow light but I don't keep it too close to the light (~3 feet away ) so I don't think it's being burned ... any help would be nice. Thanks.

@The_Last_Saxon: Tradewinds is ok, a lot of their seeds are less than viable however. I fully expect a 75% loss on packets of seeds from them, ie: if I order 4 packets of seeds, I expect one to be viable and if lucky I might get 3 out of ten of those seeds to germinate.

I've always had 90+% germination rate with their seeds. So have other people / friends I know who have ordered from them. They're a bit pricy but always send good quality stuff (or else compensate you if its damaged).

Maybe your germination set up is "off", so to speak?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fungal infect on mango, or something else?
« on: September 22, 2018, 09:27:40 PM »
If you’re  growing indoors, I wonder if it’s drying out (indoors at my house has very low humidity) or it’s getting overwatered and it’s dying from the distal ends where the roots can no longer support the growth. Fungal infection could be a possibility but at thleast end of the day I wonder if it’s root related.

Over watering would be more likely than drying out. How dry should I let mangoes get between watering. ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fungal infect on mango, or something else?
« on: September 22, 2018, 12:01:43 PM »

As the title implies, I'm having trouble with growing mangoes from seed indoors. (I live too far north to grow them outside). I have no trouble getting them to sprout and grow. But by the time they put out their third or fourth whirl of leaves, the trouble begins. As seen in the pics, a spot on the leaves discolour and begins to dry out/crisp. Eventually most of the leaf "turns" and then drops off. This continues until the young mango dies.

Any advice / tips / remedies?
Any help at all? It's really frustrating getting the mango to grow, reach ~16-18 inches, than watch it due. :/

Thanks for the reply. Have a good day. Cheers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is it?
« on: September 09, 2018, 10:23:22 PM »

So, I inherited this plant from a deceased relative a few months ago. I'm not sure what it is, or even what continent it's from (my great aunt travelled throughout Africa, and Australia, and sometimes brought random seeds back). It could be store bought (but I've never seen anything like it in the local garden centres that I visit for work). Every now and then it has tiny white flowers down the "sharp" edges of its stem.

I'm curious if anyone here knows what it is and what to do with it. Apparently it takes the drought like conditions of my south facing living room windows well enough lol.

Thanks for the replies. Cheers.

PS - right now it's about 18 inches high.
PPS - yes that's s coffee plant in the background. One of the few tropicals I am familiar with growing. ☝️

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone here from Canada?
« on: August 14, 2018, 11:23:44 PM »
Hi!
I am from Canada (Vancouver area).
For figs, I grow them outside (in the ground and in pots). The one in a pot is about six feet tall and has yet to produce a single fig (unsure of the species). The one in the ground has become a 15 foot tall by 15 foot wide monster that (when the weather is right) produces a 100 pounds of figs, plus, lol.

As for the lemon (and all citrus) watch out for Scale insects. They killed my lime and seriously hurt my lemon.

As for the mango (where did you order it from, btw?) watch out for fungus. I've sprouted at least a dozen mangoes over the years but every last one has died by the time it has reached two feet in height. :'( Fungus hits the leaves and kills them like clockwork for me.

As for rootprunings, my general rule of them is to wait until you see a decent mass of roots emerging out of the bottom of the pot. Then cut off about a third to forty percent of the roots before repotting. Best (imho) to do in early spring just before the growing season starts.

Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself

Hi,
I am a plant LOVER. Despite living in Canada (albeit Vancouver, a warmer area of the country), i like (attempting) to grow tropical fruits both inside and outside. Everything from figs to lychee to pomegranates etc. Professionally, I run a landscaping business and work with plants for a living. So this hobby is really just an extension of my work. That being said, I always love learning new things and am willing to help others as well.
Cheers.
