Your trees are doing great! Glad you found your Pickering. You could always try putting your potted plant in the spot you are considering for an in ground planting to see if it likes the spot. I have two mangos planted within 5 feet of the south wall of my house. Makes an amazing difference - I'd say around 5-7 degrees warmer than the spots where I have mangos planted far from my house. In last year's extreme cold I covered and heated all. The ones near the house had zero damage - even blooms unscathed. The ones far out in the yard were severely damaged, and one was killed outright. I don't think that the wall will give enough help that you don't still need a shelter. But I do think that ones my trees have bigger trunks the ones near the house might be able to get away with just a string of Xmas lights (haven't tried that tho). Good luck! I so want you to get fruit this year. As an aside, my manilita blooms got heavily attacked by powdery mildue. Wasn't planning to let it set fruit this year, so didnt spray. Surprisingly it still set quite a lot of fruit! Will still cull so the tree can size up, but good to know. My cogshall is big enough that I do plan to let it try to mature its first fruits - exciting!

Thanks Nancy. I think I'll give one of those a try. Being able to get the majority to come out as spray would be a huge improvement over the one I have now!

Thanks for the specific suggestions! It sounds like people have had good luck with Flo-Master for smaller sized sprayers. I might have to give that brand a try. For the record, I just checked and the one I have that is terrible is "Hi-Yield" brand.

Nancy, does your 1 gallon sprayer spray out all of the spray? Or does some get left in the tank that won't come out, and if so, how much?

Thanks,

Angela

I had a great 64oz sprayer that was excellent for spraying my small trees. It gave out after about 8 years of use. Apparently they no longer make that kind (don't know the brand because the branding rubbed off long ago). I have bought several since that look similar, but they are far inferior. Issues:

- They seem to now make 50oz size instead of 64oz. So instead of nice multiples of 8 for the markings like 16oz, 32oz, you get lame ones like 25oz.

- But the biggest issue for me is that in a 50oz spray bottle, the straw is set so that you can only actually spray out about 30oz of the spray, leaving 20oz in the bottom!

I really, really want a new hand sprayer that can spray out every bit of spray in the bottle so I can make small batches. My old one did this really well - worked every time, sprayed out entire contents of bottle. Anybody know a brand of bottle that can spray until empty?

How do the larger sprayers do with this? I have been wondering if they suffer from the same flaw?

Interesting article. Mine is Hi-Yield brand muriate of potash. Label has no info on sulphur content. I used it last year, and my trees did great. Hard to say if they would do differently without it. I think at the small amounts I'm using there will be little difference if there is a bit of excess sulphur. the article has a lot of merit if you have a significant amount of acreage. But for me, this cost $7 for a 4lb bag, vs not being able to find 0-0-50 in a quantity less the $100 worth via mail order. My bag will last me 3-4 years. Those mail order amounts would be a lifetime supply for a hobbyist! But good to know that it can change the ph levels. Let us know what you decide to do.

I'm a bit slow responding. But I use it. I found a local source that had 0-0-60. Seems close enough. I use 2oz per inch of trunk diameter per tree in Feb & April.

At other times throughout the year I do foliar nutrient sprays, mushroom compost & chelated iron soil drenches. So far, seems to be working well. With any luck I'll get my first fruits this year on my Cogshall.

Hey puglvr, thanks for pointing me to this forum. How'd you mango blooms fare? I had 5 hours last night below freezing, low of 29.3. My shelters are doing their job, the low in there was 38. Tonight is forecast for 36, so I'm leaving the shelters up one more night. I'll take them down tomorrow.
