Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB: Green Sapote, grafted tree
« on: February 21, 2024, 08:49:54 PM »
Julian at Lara Farms https://larafarmsmiami.com/ sells grafted Poamoho and Whitman. Iím aware of only three green sapote cultivars in the US. Makawao being the third. Iíve eaten those three and some seedlings. Not much selection has been done in the US and thereís not much range in quality. They are all good. All the seedlings Iíve had have been good. I rate Poamoho as slightly better than the rest. Seedlings havenít taken much longer to come into bearing than grafted trees. Any other cultivars available in the US?
How is the taste? Is it really much better than mamey sapote?

I planted orange pulp guava seeds from seed hunter in the fall of 2021 and have a healthy guava tree now. I haven't got fruit from it yet but if it turns out like the picture they had up Ill be happy!

Thanks Kankan.

Thank you. Just to confirm, I should measure the temp inside the dome and adjust the thermostat accordingly. if I set the thermostat to 77 F, it will not necessarily make it 77 degree?

It will keep it around 77F + or - a degree or 2 as it turns it on and off which is no issue. Sometimes the thermostats can read off a few degree too, I would confirm with a reliable thermometer or put the sensors in a plastic bag then submerge in a small cup of ice water. It should read 32F but if it not you know how off it is to adjust to desired temperature. Also I place the sensor near the middle of the seedling tray laying on the top of the media in a pot.

Thanks! I appreciate your detailed explanation ! One last question.. :)  How long do you keep your grow lights on?  12 hours a day or longer?..

What temperature should I set it to?

77F air temperature in the humidity tray is ideal for most.

You can do thermostat if you want, I think some people have regulators on them to keep it exactly where they want it to be.   I have a thermometer but I do not really use it since mine is always on and at same temperature.  I am sure some people on here could I answer better, I am just an amateur using the one mat and hoping for things to pop up.

Thank you. I will try without using thermostat. Let's see if it just works fine.

My heat mat will be way too hot without a thermostat, like, into the 100s. I would strongly recommend a thermostat.

They're less than $20.

Exactly right here, can find a heat mat with thermostat combo for $25 on Amazon. Thatís maybe only $10 more to add the thermostat for a consistently higher germination rate and growth but also peace of mind. Kind of like the saying ď Donít let a nickel hold up a dollar.Ē Also to me if we are going to receive rare seeds from Brazil we should make sure to do what consistently increases  success growing them to spread them around in cultivation.

I should probably by a complete kit including lights, dome, seedling tray, water tray, heat mat, thermostat.

https://www.facebook.com/reel/321086883886266 This shows the color from different angles.

Nice! You just put a thin towel in between so the pots don't get too hot. So you don't really need a thermostat, do you?

Not a tray, but just a small pot with a bag over it for humidity.  I use a heatmat I got from amazon, and have a thin towel on top of it so it doesn't get the seeds too hot.  I also use a small growlight.

Here is the link for one I got, comes with a couple trays:

The seedlings I started early December:

Not very blue obviously this young but will hopefully change with age.

Thank you. I hope so too. I am also worried about the actual color of the tree which may not be as blue as shown on the photos.

I guess we both got bitten by the same fruit fly...I have a sudden craving for all things guava as well. This orange flesh one sounds delish!

I know right!  ;D  I wonder if there is only one or few orange-fleshed varieties...

Bellamy has some seeds available.  They sprout fairly easily, 2 out of the 3 that I got popped up just fine in about 3 weeks time.

Did you use any equipment such as a seed starter tray? If so, can you recommend me one? I've never used seed starter tray or heat meat before...
