Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2022 Lychee bloom?
« on: January 16, 2022, 03:15:47 PM »
6 small trees bloomed last year.
0 this year.

Atemoya has strong apical dominance.
On small tree, 3rd branch from top doesnít grow well.
It get worst when 3rd branch get a little shade from branches above.

I have AP on cherimoya rootstock.
I graft other varieties on the AP branches.

I have a Dream on cherimoya rootstock.
I graft other varieties on the Dream branches.

I have a cherimoya with a few branches.
I graft other varieties on those

There were many graft failures when those trees were small.
Much less failures when the trees were bigger.

Many ways to get a multi-graft tree.

Last year my Sumo tree had 3 fruits.
Those fruits were seedless.

This year that same tree has 18 fruits.
I ate 1 fruit.
It had way too many seeds.

I may net tree this spring to see if fruits have seeds later.

Cherilata grows well on cherimoya rootstock.

Put it in an oven to protect from dust and humidity.
Should be ready in 3-7 days.

Remember to remove it before you use the oven.

Mine in the yard drops leaves in March then die back.
Iím hiding some in shed to see if this help.

Yours have wind protection from 2 walls and a patio door.
It could absorb enough infrared from those walls and the patio door to do well.

AFAIK version 1 is a seedling.
Version 2 supposes to be real.

My friend gave me v2 scion.
1st fruit was small, looked hideous, had few seeds.

That macapuno looks great!

Gefner looks like this around here.

This is Lisa.
Gefner should have this texture like Lisa.
Immature Gefner has a texture of a block of rubber.

1 graft in June
8 grafts on July 2nd
Most grafts growing well
A couple of grafts barely growing
1 graft failed

A couple of years back I cut back a big cherimoya tree on someoneís yard.
I kept a nurse branch to keep the tree growing.
A month later I returned to check the cuts.
An inch of cambium from the cut end was dead.
I cancelled bark grafting.
Owner sold property so I didnít return to graft.

Last year I cut back neighborís 2 big cherimoya trees around February.
I kept a nurse branch to keep the roots going.
I kept a foot of each big branches.
So tree grew many new shoots.
By June 12th I grafted the thickest shoot.
On July 2nd I grafted some more.
Iím expecting some fruits next year.

One tree I didnít graft.
Didnít have scions for it.
The shoots are thick now.
Good to graft next March.

Cold is a MAJOR stressor, but itís not an essential stressor.

Im pretty sure we can put a nail in the coffin on "dream" being a cherimoya.  Definitely a atemoya.

Dream here smell like a sugar apple when handling it.

Update with pictures?

I added lime juice to paper towel, stuffed inside ziplock bag.
Seeds still  got moldy.

Soak seeds in water 2-3 days.
Put wet seeds in ziplock bag.
Rinse seeds when mold shows up.
Pot germinated seeds.
