Tropical Fruit Discussion / AI / Chat GPT Plant Descriptions
« on: April 07, 2024, 12:42:12 PM »
I'm noticing more nurseries are using AI generated plant descriptions and I HATE it. Whatever happened to the goal of clear and concise information? Nope, instead you need to read 5 paragraphs about "unrivaled fruit tasting experiences" or other embellished filler to get the information you need. Just Fruits and Exotics and Greendreams now use it. I'm sure there are more. I thought about emailing a complaint and still might. Has anyone else noticed this? It makes it difficult when trying to compare varieties.  Rant over lol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loquat scions turning dark
« on: March 06, 2024, 02:01:54 PM »
I'm really new at grafting and wanted to try my skills on loquat. I have a 8ft tree that hasn't fruited.  I wrapped the scions in parafilm and grafted 4 branches. Well it looks like  moisture from all the rain got under the parafilm and the scions look black after just a few days.  Should I remove and wash them to try again? Or will they be okay? Should I not wrap them? I think it is the fuzziness of the scions that might have caused some issues.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fresno Underground Home and Orchard
« on: June 15, 2023, 09:11:44 AM »
I came across this video documentary about a Sicilian immigrant built an underground orchard to protect citrus and other trees from frost and extreme heat. This was back in the early 1900s so it's pretty cool to see the trees still healthy and growing. He even built an underground fish pond. Has anyone visited this place?  If I ever make it back to CA, I'd love to visit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Fruit for Beer, Wine, or Liquor?
« on: November 16, 2022, 10:18:08 AM »
Has anyone had luck turning their tropical fruit into a beer, wine or liquor?  If so, what did you use and how did it turn out?  I was thinking about maybe trying to make something from persimmon (fuyu or fully ripened astringent variety) or maybe loquat.  I know someone has to have made mulberry wine here lol.  How about a Jabo wine? Mmmm!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hurricane Ian Prep
« on: September 26, 2022, 02:02:46 PM »
I know some might be avoiding the subject but it might be helpful to start a thread on current hurricane prep for your trees. It's been such a quiet year so far, I really thought we would get lucky and it would take a pass for this season.

Does anyone have any tips for the newcomers that might be in the cone?

What trees are most sensitive to saltwater inundation?

Are there ways to protect them?

How far back do you prune branches to protect from winds?

Just thought this might help someone. Yes they can search but there might be some new advice to give. My thoughts are with ya'll along the west coast of FL.
