Hi everyone, which fruit tree species benefit from growing in a tall pot/container in your experience?  It seems like a good idea but it hasn't seemed to make much difference in my limited experience even for trees that have a long tap-root.

I'm in zone 6 so sub-tropical species will be staying in containers long-term.  With temperate species that are grown in tall pots, it's been harder to transplant them cleanly once they are going in the ground compared to "normal" pots.

Thanks for this very interesting idea, Simon.  What criteria do you (or anyone else who has tried this) use to select which seedling you will to allow to continue to grow and which one(s) will be trimmed?  If you're just trying to speed up the growth of an interesting seedling then I guess the answer is obvious.  If the goal is to quickly create a rootstock for later grafting, do you choose the seedling with a thicker stem, more leaf surface area, taller growth, or something else?  I'm inclined to select for the most leaf surface area, but then again I am in a very different climate to California.

For what it's worth, I have a bunch of double rootstock mangos grafted this summer, some double lychee grafts (which you also have an interesting thread on) and some other things.  It does seem to be pretty easy to get the graft to take, although I suppose I might experience delayed graft failure down the road.

Looks like a nice find.  Do you have Japanese beetles in your area?  I'm also in PA with a lot of Japanese beetles around and have read that they like persimmon leaves.
