Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida Says Its Fruits, Vegetables Are Safe From Invasive Fruit Fly

Florida's avocados, papayas, tomatoes, mangoes, peaches, passionfruit and peppers are safe — along with more than 400 other fruits and vegetables.

They'd all been threatened by the Oriental fruit fly, an invasive pest that infested farmlands in Miami-Dade County last fall.

As of Saturday, the state  has declared the insect eliminated.

Recently I bought some Vinamit brand jackfruit chips. They are made in Vietnam, fried in Canola oil,  and come in a slick modern metallic bag. Being a Jakfruit lover, I forked over $8.50US for a 17.5oz bag(500g) and was not disappointed. They are crispy and delicious. Very flavorful and will be a favorite of most Jakfruit enthusiasts!. Has anybody tried these?

Here are some photos from my visit today to the Fairchild Garden Ramble Fest in Coral Gables Florida. It's an awesome  event with great food, live music, tropical fruits and exotic plants for sale. The day was pretty rainy but we got in and out with minimal delay.

here I am in front of one of the incredible grafted Durian trees in the Pavillion...I have not seen any flowering or fruit set yet, but I am certain these will be the first fruiting Durians in the continental USA.

Here's a unusually colored Sugar Apple (A.squamosa) that I just picked. It's definitely a green variety but has reddish coloring along the carpels. This seedling tree had just one fruit this year so I am not sure if they all will be like this one.

Whie I was at the FTG Mango Fest in Coral Gables Florida, I visited the Whitman Pavilion and found the Mangosteens and Langsats were LOADED with fruit. More than I have ever seen..There were probably 75 to 100 fruits on the Mangosteen tree!!!!!

This past Saturday, I was able to get away and attend Fairchild's Mango Festival. I arrived at 10am and already the closest parking lots were totally full. The place was totally packed. Like always, the mango display area was incredible and all the Mango experts were there to answer your questions. Lots of great food, mangos to buy and great people made it a memorable time. It's always a great event...

Just got back from the 2015 Redlands Summer Fruit Fest. Great event as always. Chris Rollins came back from retirement to host the event. There were loads of fresh locally grown fruits and some great displays including over 200 cultivars of mango. Ran into fruit guru Steve Spangler from CA and many old friends also. The Fruit and Spice Pk looks great and there were lots of ripe fruits to taste on the park grounds also. Lots of people selling Brewster Lychees on the roadside for $3lb. They were awesome!

Today I stopped after work at my friend George's beautiful property in Parkland FL. He has LOTS of impressive fruit trees including 52 jaboticaba trees that produce over 1000lbs (500 kilos) of fruit per year. His Red Sarteneja Custard Apples are to die for. Some reach 4lbs each. I brought home 3 that weighed over 7 lbs. His Lychee crop is small this year but he has an abundance of mangos with over 15 cultivars. He also has fruiting Abiu Atemoya, Guanabana, sugar apples and many more. He also has many large Jakfruits and they produce a BIG crop as big as 63lbs each. Quite a place....

Today I picked one of my Amazon Giant Rollinias. It weighed in at 3.75lbs. My biggest ones are over 6lbs.  This was not a real big one but is still an impressive fruit. Delicious taste like a sweet lemony sugar apple. One of my favorites!

Question...How big do Coconuts get? I just bought a few grown near Fort Pierce Florida that weighed 12 pounds. I have seen bigger ones but these are indeed quite large. Who has seen bigger and where?

One of my good friends in California sent me a box of Cherimoyas that were grown in Camarillo. They are DELICIOUS! It's almost impossible to find good ones in the stores here but these are the best I have ever tasted. Not sure of the cultivar. They are grown by Dario Grossberger and I can vouch that he knows how to grow these to perfection. His website is Cherimoya.com

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The Florida Rambutan project (FGM)

The Florida Rambutan project
Call me crazy but I am attempting to fruit a Rambutan outdoors in South Florida. This has already been done here but it is still pretty rare, having been accomplished maybe twice and on a small scale. It is much rarer than fruiting mangosteens here which has been done several times. Even the Whitman Pavillion of rare fruit trees lacks a Rambutan and that tells you something.  My plan is to attempt this with 3 grafted trees growing in pots of very acid soil. I am very aware that Rambus hate our native alkaline soils and that it would be a death sentence if I stuck them in the ground. What inspired me was seeing grafted Rambutan trees in Puerto Rico with fruit hanging on them! So far my trees are growing nicely and there is hope. I will report on my progress over the next year.

To all my Forum friends...I wish you all a Merry Christmas. Just picked this J-31 Jakfruit (14lbs) yesterday. Next to it I have a bottle of homemade "coquito" which is a Puerto Rican coconut drink made with rum. I always make this for the holidays....

The Jakfruit Jubilee at Fairchild was a cool event. There were lots of fruit for sale ($1.50/lb) and plenty of quality grafted trees for $25.  I bought a "Fairchild First" which is one that produce small fruits. The speakers included Richard Campbell, Noris Ledesma and Chris Rollins and they were awesome. There were over 20 cultivars displayed and the tasting table offered up 4 cultivars including J-31. A real nice event worth repeating every year!

Here's what I got today from my property.  Some of the Big Red and Big Green were over 20ozs. Sorry but these are not chewy or rubbery. My car tires are "rubbery" and that's OK, but I want my fruit to be sweet and delicious. Texture is secondary. These are just the best damn sugar apples that you can eat!!!!  Taste IS everything....
