Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mix for potting cactI?
« on: January 05, 2015, 03:40:49 PM »

I don't really like the cactus mix sold in Australia. It's basically just sand and some other nameless crap that tends to settle badly during periods of heavy rain. Is there some kind of alternative? I am going to need to pot a few steno cereus columnar types.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unusual cactus fruit update
« on: January 05, 2015, 01:19:46 AM »
So I received two bare rooted plants today of the unusual and so far unidentifiable cactus fruit. Going on null zeros suggestion that these were going to be a Harrisia in all probability I was blown away to discover that they are definitely not Harrisia sp.The plants themselves look an exactly like dragonfruit, however they appear to have a base from which several tendrils grow out from as opposed to being vinous like dragons. So it looks like this must be some kind of epiphyllums. Very impressed given that the fruit is as large as a medium sized dragon fruit. What is particularly exciting is that the guy who sent them to me rates the fruit as considerably better tasting than any dragonfruit or opuntia he has tried.

So the long and short of it is, I have an epi and I don't know what it is, but it looks like a winner.

This thing was growing in Melbourne which routinely gets down to zero  and beyond in winter with wind chill factored in.

Depending on the price I'm going to have it gene typed. Would post pics of the plant but my pc isn't functioning right now, going to try and post via my phone a little later unless someone can enlighten me as to how to do this directly from this iPad I'm typing on.

What is the South African Fruit at 6:18 of this video? Peeled like a lychee or longan. Guy calls it marula (not sure if the spelling is correct).

My Alstonville; absolutely covered in Blooms. Not the best CV, but a very good green caviar type which can't be beat for abundance. Most of my collection are blooming currently including red champagne, lismore pink, and Purple Bliss. No movement on Mia rose, or the very hyped Byron Sunrise.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter Black Sapote
« on: August 07, 2014, 06:22:30 PM »

Quite large. About the same size as bigger green apples. Still under ripe, these will be a week off at least. Not sure of the variety, these come from a guy's oatch up the road, whose trees are literally loaded with them right now. Hundreds of fruit have set on about 7 or eight large trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air pruning pots--opinions?

Tell me what you like about them, don't like about them.

Have two types, issai which is self pollinating and red, which needs a male (any male kiwifruit will work).

Anyone have much experience with this is the subtropics?

So I finished digging a bed this week, it's 10 feet long, 1 meter deep, 1 meter wide. I did this by hand with a mattock and a shovel, and it sucked. Basically I'm on hard baked clay that isn't far off being brick, and to make it worse there's eucalyptus roots all through it. Not fun work. Has to be done because nothing can grow in  unamended soil at my patch. I don't think it even qualifies as soil.

Soil sample:

Anyway, I was all chuffed at being done before I hit something getting out the last remnants of soil. This turned out to be irrigation pipe--irrigation pipe with the mains power cable running underneath.

So after I'd calmed down, having first considered how close I had come to frying myself, I'm now at the point of despair having realized that I just can't plant fruit trees on top of my power cable. A lot of work went into the trench, and I don't want all that to have been for nothing.

I'm wondering if I can fill this with half compost and half mineral soil, and plant bananas in it. I'm thinking the roots wouldn't be invasive or strong enough to cause any real damage to the power cable.

Extra pics are of the beginning stages of a dragonfruit grove I'm building. So far I have eight holes 4 feet deep by 1 1/2 wide. I plan on having sixteen 6 foot trellises all up. Little muntigia as a pioneer tree which I hope will create a bit of shade and a wind break.

75
I'm thinking ti might be ok  pur liquid fish-based fertilizer into the collection tank which my irrigation lines are supplied from. This will save me a lot of time and energy lugging around watering cans etc.

Is this safe. or might I create some kind of Evil bacterial soup?
