Citrus General Discussion / What should i do with this pomello
« on: September 10, 2021, 03:16:30 AM »
This plant has set two fruits , i am wondering what to do with it over the winter, i am assuming that they should ripen next year arround summer so can i keep it in a basement without strong light and temps arround 2-5 C. Theese temps are the maximum lowest ones that i get in there in the dead of winter, it can get a little colder thought at arround 0-1 C at rare times.
Will the fruits drop?? They will definitely stop growing ,but the question is if they do not drop ,will they continue their growth next spring??

The alternative is to bring it in my greenhouse ,which i will heat .
What is the minimum temp a fruiting pomello can withstand without damaje to its fruit? The plant is grafted on flying dragon btw.
Thanks !

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit air layering
« on: September 10, 2021, 01:40:52 AM »
Anyone tried to airlayer dragon fruit stemms ? Just watched a video on youtube where a person air layered several stemms and they did root. I guess this may be a better alternative to the cuttings since for me they some times tend to rot, this should not be a problem when the branches are still connected to the mother plant ??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this the edible aloe vera?

Thanks for the comments ! It may be the maturity thing going on, since i looked at pics of barbadensis and some of them show exactly the same plant as mine, others show much lsrger plants without the specled leaves .some of those big plants have babies that also had the specled leaves so this should be also a clue .
I will research the consumation thing , will let the plant get bigger first then to see what variety it may be. Meanwhile  i will use it on wounds and such.

About the eating i tried both of mine just like that, yet only a little nibble, the dark green leaved one was very bitter, the other one had no bitterness whatsoever.

I had a similar issue with P. decaisneana which I had grown in a pot and spread into a 6x12' mass. Perhaps the same issue. I had let it grow with minimal fertilizer/intervention to get it to flower. After a while buds started to come but would turn yellow and fall off, also the older foliage became discolored, veiny with yellow, but the new growth was fine. Seemed like some nutritional deficiency so I added some micronutrient solution and hen manure pellets and that cured the older foliage and the buds.
thanks, maybe i should be fertilizing it harder. I will wait for the soil to get drier and then water with some kind of fert. Mine is also setting alot of buds now, there are no yellow buds to this moment, all healthy green and growing ....

Do your homework. Pretty sure even "edible" aloe should be processed in some way before ingesting.
thanks i will research this more deeply !:

Heres my other aloe variety, i think i identified the one i was asking for. Its aloe vera chinensis. Now i,ll have to find the edible one which is aloe vera barbadensis.

This plant seems to be having some kind of a problem, its growing normally thought. The new leaves ado not get affected ,but when they get mature the discoloration slowly shows up.
I digged arround the plants root perrimeter and it seems to me tha a vine with so much vegetative mass shoul have a thick mat of feeder roots near the base. I did not saw any...the  soil is moist. I am thinking now that i have overwatered the plant and the feeder roots died off, which in return leads to it not being able to support its growth. I have had such things happen to different plants in the past...
Thanks for your opinion on the problem, i want to get the plants as healthy as possible since its starting to form flower buds and i will be self pollinating theese in hope for a fruit set. I'll quit wattering it, untill it shows some watter stress sighns, in case the problem is too much water.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee frost hardiness?

I am also interested in this as i have one seedling in the ground in my gh.
My tought is that u may be good with providing some kind of frost cloth protection on the coldest nights. I've read that lychees do need a bit of chill in order to fruit, tought -6 may be too much. Better wait someone else with direct experience in the case, to comment.....

U could bend the branches down with ropes fixes to a wooden stake ,hammered into the ground. I've did this to different types of plants ,when i want to spread the crown.

Yes I would expect sun injury to take at least a couple seasons to manifest. It doesn’t kill them quickly.
nice thanks for all the information, i will paint them then, after leaf drop...

Yep! They are very susceptible to winter sun injury.
thanks, i had some dieback on one of my plants last winter, thought it was on the new branches, not on the thick parts....it may not have been the sun only, since the  plant was newly planted arround fall ...

763
Super fantastic! Impressive collection, especially for your locale. And they look so happy.
thanks ! Some of them have deficiencies which i need to sort out ....its hard to keep everyone happy 🤣

764
I  only post from my cell phone also, the operating system is android. If i posted more frequently  i would probably have the same problems....it seems the stars were aligned for me, at the day of posting haha....

Thanks once again for the kind words to all of you !! 🙂

Nice work, thanks for sharing.

How do you get this forum to load all those photos?  I get to 2 maybe 3 photo links and then the posting window rejects any more.
i dunno ,i uploaded the first set of pics without any problems, just add the links and then the writing was kind of hard sinse i was always forgetting what pic was next ....i dunno why u are having problems with this , the site via which i post the images is postimage...

If you go back to 2020 or even 2019 I think I have a video just on incarnata (maypop) just FYI

thanks for the kind words!
Yes I paint the trunks with latex paint and (many of the branches) in late autumn or early winter.
I try to keep the paint off the buds but so far I haven’t seen any problems.
I will probably not continue painting branches since the trees are so big now. Normally people only paint the trunks, but I’m a little eccentric 😁
i may try the paint on my asimina, u paint them so the trunk does not get a sun injury in winter right ??

If you check back over my YouTube videos I think I did a maypop one last year, and you can see the white one.
It’s a known phenotype, not unique to me :)

If the seed is mature and fully formed (black with dimpled surface) then it should be viable and would cross pollinate, in my view.
i checked your garden tour video, very nice plants ! Sadly the white one did not had an opened flower but my imagination filled the dead spot.
I haven't seen figs with such long necks to them...
Your pawpaws look awesome, did you paint the trunks and all with latecs paint?? Even the same years growth and u get the buds covered in paint and do not have problems ?

769
Thanks everyone !! Most of the plants are young still ,but gradually they should pick up on fruiting.... i have some other plants that i havent shown but was exhausted from uploading pics and all and decided to call it a day . .. 😀😀
There are others here that also are keen on tropical and rare fruit plants, we sometimes exchange plants.... its nice to have other plant geeks close by .

Back on the incarnata, i am wondering if when a solo plant sets fruit , are the seeds viable?? Wondering  if mine sets a fruit or two next season and i grow out the seedlings to cross with one another and the mother plant, will this take me out of the pollination issue ??

Yes! A few more flowers that are open on the new vine have smooth ovaries. This will make it easier for me to distinguish between the two while hand pollinating next year. Hoping to have a lot more fruit set 🙂
Awesome!
So have you had mature fruits from this smooth vine yet? It will be interesting to see if they are unique in any other ways.
Sometimes small differences like this can portend larger ones - once I started several seeds and one came up with pure green stem while all the others had some redness. The green one turned out to be a white-flowered vine.
Very interesting about the white flowering incarnata, any pics of the flowers ??

None that I can see. It's too late for any to mature if I hand pollinate now. But I will definitely need to keep the older vine pruned next year  so it doesn't take over the entire fence leaving some room for this one.

I grew this edulis from seed which has very pronounced red pigment in the leaves and stems compared to another edulis I have with only green in the leaves

the edulis reminds me of my flavicarpas, which generally have reddish stemms and main veins on the leaves. Thought your vine has way more pronounced colour then mine have ever had

Although slightly unrelated, this seems like a good thread to ask this question: Has anyone here had luck with a passively heated greenhouse? I'm toying with the idea of building a greenhouse, but the thought of an electric greenhouse heater makes me shy away from the idea, just due to the cost of using one.
it will be a first winter for mine, i will be heating with wood stove as an active heating way, for the passive part i will place a big bubble wrapping material sheets on the outside of the policarbonate, for additional heat rettention. I just had this idea and when googled i found its actually a thing long before i thought abbout that, the material can be found under the name of insulating matterial for greenhouses, thought  that i think  is just a fancy name for the same packaging material....
Without a first hand experience i would suggest u a policarbonate material greenhouse ,thicker is better for heat retention, and as other suggested there are other variables like if its close to buildings, on a sunny site it the coldest months etc etc, which may help the greenhouse to be warmer without supplemental heating on your part...
