Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cecropia Peltata Growth Rate
« on: March 07, 2024, 11:09:45 AM »
I grew this tree from seed probably around February of last year and dug it up at the end of the season to overwinter. Tree was likely around 6 ft mark. Anybody with experience growing cecropia know if this thing will likely flower this season ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seed grown cherimoya from Rincon Tropics
« on: February 08, 2024, 11:51:29 PM »
Thanks Nick. Yeah I'll do that then.

My theoretical fruit will probably finish inside my grow tent under LEDs, provided I don't get pests or mold issues on it due to the high humidity of the tent. But that is to be seen. I don't recall which forum member did this but he put his potted annona by a window indoors and it seemd to ripen the fruit so that is also an option

I've gotten cherimoya to ripen in the past, mid November, when it was in the greenhouse

This year I got this MASSIVE fruit to somehow ripen indoors under crowded grow lights haha I pollinated an el bumpo flower with pollen from another annona  that I don't remember exactly which one but was either temoylata or African pride atemoya. Ended up producing two viable seeds that I planted out

I've experimented with putting annonas out in early spring to encourage leaf drop but doesn't really work. I'd just strip the leaves, just did that with my atemoya last week. I'm trying to find the best time of the year to do this since our growing season is more limited

Sweet! Those look amazing too. Thanks so much for sharing.

How long did they take to fruit for you from seed?

Started flowering a few months from seed and put it in ground at the end of year 1. Fruit on the second year

Hardy tamarillo as well

Any specific cultivars? Have you grown it personally or know how well it handles the cold? Some stuff I’ve read says only hardy to 20-22 degrees, others says 15 degrees F.

No specific cultivars that I’m aware of but yes I’m currently growing one in ground. It’s gets some protection as I cover in a hoophouse in the winter and wrap in frost cloth next to a black garbage can filled with water. All that being said it’s sailed thru low teens and probably single digits on many occasions. Information on the internet says you need two for cross pollination but I got plenty of fruit off a solo plant

Super impressive! How's the flavor in general and compared to the regular Tamarillo?

I found these seeds online. Look similar to the ones you grow?

I’ve never tried regular tamarillo before so I can’t speak on the comparison but I’d say the hardy ones have this peach pineapple acid flavor goin on

Yup that’s where I got my seeds from. Just got some guava tamarillo germinating in the past week so I’ll see how those do this summer

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: What to try in zone 8a-b

I'm in 7A with swingle citrumelo unprotected in ground for the past few years. I also have xie Shan satsuma, yuzu, and citremon in ground but are protected by an unheated hoop house in the winter. You should have no problem with any of these in zone 8

45
Either just wait it out or you can try to time it correctly and use pliers to crack the seal. Gota be careful tho

Well I heard back from them and it seems that they don’t supply a phytosanitary certificate.  Seems a bit sketchy/risky.

You’ll be fine, I’ve ordered from them multiple times with no issue

Starting to get some germination on the seeds I picked up from Ryan earlier last year

Nice!
Ryan really has the good stuff…I’ll have to send him a message
All jokes aside, I think those came from Miguel, which were not cold stratified so that’s probably why they took a few months.
Anyone else who bought seeds from me can chime in?
Esp regarding the biqi ones. I heard some people had them sprouting in a matter of a few weeks.
Best,
Ryan

Yea I'm pretty sure these were from the Miguel batch, I hit them with a 30 day cold stratification back in the summer

Just sowed some of these seeds. These ones look pretty wild, hoping to get some good germination
