My Slice of Paradise...Orchard 11/05/2012
« on: May 11, 2012, 01:09:14 PM »
Hi to all fellow member's :),

Welcome to my humble orchard

Starting with my fav. song...R.I.P
OFFICIAL Somewhere over the Rainbow - Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole

Heres some pics of my orchard in Madeira Island! I worked all day on the land...to prepare the small terraces for the irrigation, since my land is flood irrigated once a week. The duration of the irrigation is 90 min.

My Cherimoya tree...This majestic tree must be over 50 year's old 8) and was planted by my Grandmother back in the day!!!!

My cousin Esteves...Just kidding that's me with my favorite tree! ;D ;D ;D

My pineapple flowering :)

Papaya from T.C!

Lemon Guava...highly productive :)

Strawberry Guava

Tamarillo

Coffee...Hopefully, I will brew my own cup of coffee this year...they are heavy with flower buds! :)

This is sweet potato...I use sweet potato as a ground cover to suppress the weeds and with the added benefit of  tuber's late in the season!
This particular variety produces large tubers and it's not rare to get tubers of 1.5kg...I will harvest the sweet potatoes in December for extra large tubers

A row of Maracuja...Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa and P. edulis var. flavicarpa x P. edulis for cross pollination!!!

It was soo nice to work near the Maracuja's...The sweet musky aroma was fantastic 8)

Persimmon tree

Jabuticaba Seedling

Monstera deliciosa...I luv this fruit...YUMMY ;D

Majestic Plum Tree...production has drop...due to age :(

Pink fleshed Guava tree...very productive!

White flesed ''Crunchy'' Guava seedling

Fig Trees

Yesterday...was the best day eva...I planted my Jack's
They came from an excellent crispy ''Dura'' Jackfruit!

BNS nº1 Jackfruit

Painter Jackfruit

I will inarch them in a year's time...to shorten the time for them to produce!

Sugar cane...native purple variety and very sweet!

Tommy atkins Mango...which will produce fruit's for the first time! THX Zands and Rob!!!

The Mango tree has 8 fruit...YIPPEE

Kei Apple...The thorns...Are so painfully when you r weeding!!! :'(

A lemon tree that I grafted about 2 year's ago... :)

An Aussie native in my orchard...Macadamia seedling...about 3 years old! ;D ;D ;D

Maracuja doce/Sweet granadilla seedling!

Row of Suri's

White Sapote

Avocado tree and Harvest!

This variety is a ''Mild Type''...excellent for milkshakes! Yummy

These Avocados produce from December to mid June!

Banana's from T.C...can produce a banana bunch over 40kg...

HOPEFULLY By this year or the following...I will plant Black Sapotes, Silas wood Sapodilla seedlings, Some interesting Anonas,
Rose sapote, canistel's and Fairchild's nº2 canistel seedlings...? ;D ;D ;D

Hope everyone enjoy's them pics :)

Wow great looking trees, and very fertile soil. The guava seedling that is white fleshed is called the "Apple Guava" it is from Thailand. I have one and it tastes awesome. Great guava flavor with a great mix of sweet and acid, without the heavy guava smell. Feed it some water soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer and she will flower soon. I can't believe that even on an isolated island you have to deal with leaf miners as is evident on your lemon tree. Thanks for sharing  your picture.

Hi Enduser,
Apple guava sure is tasty! ;D

Decades of importing citrus trees from outside...without inspecting for pest's and diseases...alot of citrus growers here have alot of problems with citrus pest's...leaf miner's, various Aphids...soothy mold :'( I removed my citrus trees about 2 year's ago...Because of these pest's. Now, I'm giving them a shot again... :)

Thats a beautiful plot of land excellent looking trees.  Have you considered heavily pruning the large cherimoya that your grandmother planted in order to hopefully rejuvinate it and perhaps get it to produce better?  The papaya on the ground looks yummy 8)

Hi Simon,
The tree produces well...no need of heavy pruning ;) I only thin some brunches that tend to get ''tangled''.

Hi Behlgarden,
Of course not my friend...I ate it today :) The Flavour was mild and not very sweet :'( But, with a bit of sugar...it was yummy ;)

That is pure gold Mr Silva and I see you even have dashing good looks as well.Your soil looks like it is rich and basalt derived. Some black sapotes are well suited to your climate.Ricks late, maher and bernicker are 3 popular cool tolerant types in australia.I am waiting for my ross sapote to have its first fruit and I snagged a grafted canistel from a privately bred line that I'm trying to hurry up.

Excellent show Steven! I like your slice of paradise. Especially like granny's cherimoya tree. Way to go granny. She knows how to leave a legacy! Your soil looks very rich! Wish you could mail me some.  ;D
BTW, Iz is probably the most beloved modern singer here in Hawaii. All his albums are fantastic. I find his voice to be angelic. Over the Rainbow got him into the mainstream, but his Hawaiian songs are even more beautiful.

Steven I am a keen fisherman for reef and estuary fish. The trigger for when to go to the reef chasing mackerel, coral trout, red emperor etc is the water cooling. For the brief window that the offshore sea temp drops to a chilly 80 f or less the fishing is best.Right now it is a brisk 79.7f and I should be out there to fill the freezer.

Thanks for all the compliments...really appreciate them :)

The soil is rich...any thing I plant grows well. :) I really don't know the exact composition of the soil...Mike I think you are right ''basalt derived''

Hopefully...I will take pics of the harvest...late in the season :)

Best regards
Steven

Hi Mike,
I'm a newbie at fishing... I like to harvest limpets and sea snail's from the rock's...they very tasty ;D

about 2 years ago, I caught a small hammerhead shark...I was really shocked :o...the skin had a sand paper texture...I released it of course ;D ;D ;D

If anyone has limpet's...grill them in a pan...make a sauce of butter, garlic, salt, a pinch of chilli and lemon at the end....so delicious ;D

You did a great job with your plants and trees. You are a man of the soil.

Our South Florida soil is essentially white beach sand. I would love to have red soil like yours. Our work around in Florida is to get humus humus humus into the soil via chipped tree mulch. You have clay and humus to hold your soil nutrients, fertilizer etc. We just have humus

Great pictures Steven......very much enjoyed seeing your "slice of paradise.' Wow, summertime water temps going up to 73F?  Brrrrrr......we South Floridians would have a hard time with that.  Going to the beach and into the water when the water temps are below 80 requires a wet suit.  LOL  Thanks for posting.

Water temps here hang around the 85f mark and there is no swimming in coastal waters due to box jellyfish and irikanjis which take out more people than sharks or crocs. At this time I fish for barramundi, mangrove jack and mud crabs in local watercourses. When I go to the reef it is a failure if I don't get 10 or so whoppers.Hammerheads are one of the worst sharks for stealing fish you are trying to pull up and their skin is like sandpaper. No one knows you can eat limpets here but oysters, mussels and pipis get some attention.Steven is it safe to swim in the sea of your home area?
