Why does this happen to avocados?
« on: October 22, 2014, 10:06:53 AM »
Got these from Costco, they were green and hard. So I left them on the counter for a few days. They felt soft enough this morning, cut them up, and the inside is "spoiled". What caused them to go bad?
Thanks,

Looks like cold damage. Stored below 40 degree or less. What type were day? Do they have a label?

According to the label, they are CA Haas.

Avocados I bought at Costco always go bad like that too, not sure why, so I stopped buying avocados from Costco you can't eat them anyways. No bruises on the outside, Carlos maybe right cold damage?

Some times the people in the store do not know that avocados can not be stored in the same place as vegetables. Sometimes they just dont have a cooler at 45-50 degrees.

Bring them back to the shop. We had the same thing in Holland and after loads of people complainted in the newspapers they changed something so now only good ones are sold.

Just don't accept it, they ruin the whole avocadomarket by selling these.

I had the same problem with rotten avocado's from Costco.
I think JF posted the same issue a while back.
I'm not a expert but they seem a bit large for CA Hass compare to store bought at Staters, Albertsons

Same thing happens to us. Not always, but enough to be aggravating. It is an 8 mile round trip to take them back to Costco, so we just grin and bear it.

I won't buy Sam's Club or Costco cados.  No telling the length of time and conditions of storage they've been subjected to.  Sometimes we get good Hass from Mexico at our local grocer.  Those from Peru are usually the pits.  My first choice for top quality Hass and low price is Morro Creek Avocado Ranch.

Am finishing up Reeds from Fallbrook.  Got to say it's the best avocado I've ever eaten, and a note.  Read where you can't make good guacamole' with Reeds, that they are more of a slicing variety.  WRONG.  They are so creamy, silky rich, nutty...they make great guac!  Of course my fresh Mex limes kinda help. ;) When they are yellow and come off with a light tug, they are perfect. - light green flesh, juicy, rich, tart.
