White Sapote - Which one should I get?
« on: May 25, 2012, 02:38:28 PM »
I am planning to add white sapote to my collection, one tree. what is your suggestion for the best sapote for CA weather?

Anyone know any place around Southern California that has reasonable prices for a healthy size plant? 10 to 15 gal.

Found this online while searching on Google

- Jay Rusky Yellow (Excellent)
- Selk (Excellent)
- suebelle (Excellent)
- Santa Cruz (Excellent)
- Lemon Gold (Good)
- Michele (Good)
- Cuccio (Good)
- Vernon (Fair)
- McDill (Poor)

Anyone growing any of the above and their thoughts and preferences?

I bought a nice sized Subelle from Greenthumb international. I got fruit last year from Subelle, it was excellent. Was $40 when I got the plant, but that was 3 years ago.

I am pretty sure each cultivator and its taste goes with growing conditions and care. Excellent in one place may be poor at another.

Here Home Depot has that yellow sapote but not sure what cultivator it is. I will find out. My plan is to get a healthy plant and then go begging for scions of various sapote. Need to find Harry of Sapote!

I was at an old sapote grove last weekend to collect scion wood and seedlings. This is off season here but Selk ripens now. I would get it and another regular season cultivar. Scions and seedlings were distributed to San Diego CRFG members Wednesday night.

I got suebelle from home depot for 26ish 2 years ago. Chestnut is also popular from a tasting survey in San Diego early last year.

Not sure who Harry is but the guy who owns the sapote grove lives somewhere in Studio City.

JF, thank you. I want to start growing sapote after failure in lychees. I am disheartened by my dead tree of Lychee. I need to get back into that one too.

Also, you wanted that prolific sapodilla scion, I got it covered from my small plant.

Sure will do it. I will bring fruit, budwood, and also bring leaves from other two plants that I dont know what variety those are. I think I should pick the fruit 4 days ahead of the meeting so its ripe and we can do a taste test too.

Behl, I have collected many varieties of white sapote, I went with a few other folks a couple of years ago to Bob Chambers groves in De Luz,Ca. and collected 28 or so varieties. Some of the taste test winners are; Rainbow,Selck,Chestnut,Cuccio,Malibu#3,Vernon but it's all a matter of taste and what you like. I can trade you some scions if you want to. Send me a P.Message. Nullzero can also trade or ? send P.M.

Scott, you were on that trip to Bob Chambers? Cooool!! I read about that. Did you do a second visit? Any pictures?

I grafted Rainbow,Selck,Chestnut, Malibu#3 and others. Glad to hear that they are winners :) Unfortunatelly they are to small to pick any budwood...

These trips to Bob Chambers' orchard are annual or semi-annual. Bob himself doesn't go to most of them because he lives here in LA. Maybe we can drive him down there if we find out when the next one will be. I think the 2 harvests are March and November, depending on variety.

That chestnut guy from up north registered whitesapote.com and put some photos of Bob and his trees on it.

Wow Felipe, glad to hear your growing all those varieties, but no we never made a second trip because of Huanglongbing being found in L.A area. We didn't want to bring any kind of bug back! No, I don't have any pictures but I know that Harvey C. who is a member of this forum took many he's the Chestnut guy Fyliu.
Behl, I got a e-mail I guest from you but no address, please send another P.M. with address
