Guatemalen Rambutans have arrived South FL
« on: May 17, 2015, 11:58:13 AM »
Just wanted to let everyone in the Palm Beach and North Broward areas know that fresh Guatemalen Rambutans have arrived in the local markets. I bought some yesterday at Western Beef in Boca Raton for $3.99lb but they are also available at Penn Dutch in Margate and The Boys Market in Delray Bch. Very delicious and just a nice fruit....

I have had these at Western beef in previous years.  The fruits are of high quality and come pretty close to fresh picked fruit flavor. Not sure if these are irradiated but you can't tell from eating them.  I think they must be treated with something, however, as they seem to stay in good external condition longer than what I have experienced with fresh picked.

Those indeed look to be high quality. Better than any Ive seen in markets here.
I think I spotted "irradiated" on the box in the first picture.

My experience of Rambutan so far has been like very bland lychee with a sort of nauseating sweetness. The ones I've had looked similar to the picture - but there may be better and worse cultivars. I planted the seeds anyway, but the ones I tried did not impress me much. I prefer longan even to the rambutan, which came in 3rd. They seemed to have almost no flavor or smell. I would eat them if I already had them in my yard, but I wouldn't go out of my way for them. They certainly have an exotic look, though!

Guatemalan fruits are exempt from irradiation or other treatments for fruit flies as they are supposed to have some valleys free of fruit flies.

Seeds for trade anyone? It's one of the few cashcrop species I still don't have....

Rambutans are not like bland lychees and just as lychees have a distinct taste so do rambutans.People who grew up with them often prefer them and many people in my area prefer rambutans but I think lychees have the edge . They are less acidic than most lychees but the sticking to the testa of flesh and lesser flesh recovery put lychees ahead in these respects.

I like rambutans, but my fondness for them pales in comparison to that for lychees. I don't think the testa problem is the main reason most people like lychees better than rambutan. It has to do completely with much richer taste and fragrance. I'd say 9 out of 10 people here like lychee better than rambutan. The main thing rambutan has going for it is that it is a much more consistent bearer than lychee. So for commerce rambutan has it hands down. Producing consistent crops of lychee is extremely tricky.
