New home new plantings!
« on: June 25, 2015, 01:43:17 PM »
Moved to long beach recently and just started plopping trees in the ground haha
First were the jaboticabas.(last pics)  I had one and my partner purchased one a few months back so.... His and his jabos hahaha then a giant fuyu persimmon(second pic)
Then yesterday day I removed this giant ugly ficus and replaced it with my little el bumpo cherimoya( first pic)

I still have a lot of cypress trees and jasmin to destroy to make room for more. Can't wait to make this backyard and edible forest!!!

You guys are allowed to destroy Cyprus there? Try that here and the EPA is on you so fast its silly. I had a new neighbor cutting some down in his yard, he had the EPA there in less than a half hour and we are in the middle of nowhere. You guys getting enough water for jacobitabas?

im pretty sure that Cyprus stump has been there for awhile, they sort of just harden and fossilize as opposed to decaying.

Congratulations Osito, I can picture that future yard in my mind. Those are Italian cypress trees I believe and Floridians are talking about Bald or possibly Leyland cypress trees? Not sure. With no HOA's you can do what you heart and mind desires (for the most part). Good luck, Chris

Not a matter of an HOA but yes perhaps you guys have a different species of Cyprus. They are a protected species here in FL and it takes an act of god or  a lot of money from developers to grease palms to get rid of them here. Its always good to buy land next to a Cyprus woods, you usually never have to worry about neighbors.

Not having an HOA is awesome, we have a volunteer one here and essentially as long as I stick to county zoning laws, I can do whatever I want and the blue hairs on the HOA can only glare at me. Thus 80 trees and counting. Curb appeal? Heh if I have my way you wont be able to see my house from the curb.

Look forward to hearing how your orchard progresses.

Whatever kind I have here in Central FL sure is. Like I said, one dude was cutting his down and the EPA was there in a flash with a fine and a desist order within thirty minutes of him starting.

You are off to a good start on your blank canvas. Looks like you have decent soil. Unlike the 100% sandy soils common here (south Florida) which have zero clay content and nil organic matter. Not that the wild vegetation and brush flourishing in empty lots seem to mind.

My fino de jete always finish flowering before other varieties start. I don't know how to make it set fruit since it's only a branch.

Fyliu- remove a leaf when you see buds forming on your other trees. It'll throw more flowers

Thanks.

This variety has the most problems since it's so much earlier than everything else I have. I have had no fruits from it for 4 years.

Spanish cherimoyas have all been early but if you HP they will fruit easily.....i.e. SP series. These might be the ideal cherimoyas for South Florida

Hmm .. I think this is very difficult and risky. After buy house san diego I am afraid that some plants will not be able to take root in my garden.

Why is your first post responding to a thread that is almost six years old?

The person has not been on the forum since. But, to rebut their statement, if plants are transplanted with enough of the rootball intact and given enough care after transplanting (which should not be done in the scorching heat of summer, if at all possible), most plants will recover and become established in their new location.

Also, I wonder how Osito's project went at his new yard? There has been no update in many years; if he was successful, he would have his fruit forest by now.

JonyWest must have found (stumbled across) this thread via internet search. Signed up and gave us his/her two sentence scintillating comment. Never to return again.
