Sugar apple or not
« on: October 05, 2021, 03:21:46 PM »
Please help identifying the fruit.
I bought it in the local store as sugar apple.
Texture is creamy and nothing chewy. Very fragrant. A little grainy right near skin Seeds look just like cherimoya seeds.
I thought it was taiwan gold sugar apple, and wanted to plant, but now not sure.

Not sugar apple, you’re even luckier
It’s a Rollinia (Annona mucosa/Rollinia deliciosa).
Cheers!

OMG!
I have never tried rollinia before, they are not sold on Orlando.
Its delicious! I thought rollinia has spikes. This one was smooth.
I will plant seeds. Thank you!!

What store was this found in? Did they have any more? I've always wanted to taste one.

Funny. I was at the same store (iFresh) and noticed they had Rollinia mixed up as sugar apple. Expensive though. Few in good condition.  While there I also got a frozen Durian. They also had Mexican Keitts and Ataulfo.

I doubled back and found some more but in the unrefrigerated section this time. Last time they were labelled sugar apples. This time they are sign posted as soursop, sitting next to cherimoya, the actual fruit sticker says “sand pear” and they’re from Hebei, China. Looking up the place, it’s entirely plausible given the province has a tempered range as follows  “The warmest time of year is generally late July where highs are regularly around 90.7°F (32.6°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 74.7°F (23.7°C) at night.”

That rollinia has large segments and that usually means fewer seeds and higher flesh yield. I find the texture more appealing and the flavour more lemony when eaten slightly under ripe.

So I took Mike’s advice and now concur.  Eaten earlier than normal rollinia becomes similar, not identical, to sugar apple.  In some ways superior given no fiber.  Thanks Mike
