Rudy Haluza passed away
« on: October 08, 2021, 03:06:49 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am deeply saddened to inform you that Rudy Haluza has passed away at 92 years of age from Cancer. Rudy will always be remembered for his introduction of “El Bumpo”, Rudy #20” and many other seedling introductions.

Rudy had a passion for the delicious tropical and subtropical fruits that can be grown in SoCal and his seedling selections are one of the reasons why I began planting seedlings along with grafted trees. With grafted trees, you know what you’re getting but with seedlings, you can push the envelope and come up with a selection that will wow the world like Rudy did with El Bumpo.

Rudy is the one sitting up in the middle in the front row.

My condolences goes out to the Haluza family. I’m sure a huge void will be left in his family but Rudy will always be remembered in the lives of all those he touched around him.

Simon

Rudy was sort of a renaissance man, one of a kind. His achievements go beyond the exotic fruit world.
He was a decorated fighter pilot during the Korean War; he was airline pilot for over 30 year; he was a 1968 Olympic bronze medalist and so on…..in the exotic fruit world he was the creator of Libby( libby+red sugar apple = Lisa Atemoya) and El Bumpo cherimoyas and many others he did not register with CRFG. I will personally miss talking to him and soaking in his knowledge, May he Rest In Peace!

Thank you for sharing the news, Simon.  I'm sorry to hear it.  Whenever I get an El Bumpo cherimoya to produce fruit, I will remember him for sharing it with us all.

It sounds like he had a full and rich life, and I imagine he's in a better place or state (or enjoying whatever happens to the non-physical part of our being), but I'm sure he will be missed by family and friends.

kh0110 Thank you for posting that picture!  When was it taken?  And I see the large dead part of stump there, which makes me wonder: do you know when he planted it?

Photo was taken in 2014, a friend (Ashok) and I went to his place to do an airlayer on his prolific Lychee tree in front of the house. A Brewster, I think it was. I don't remember when the EB mother tree was planted. When we got there, that was all that was left of it.
