Best mangos of this season
« on: July 07, 2022, 10:05:55 AM »
We had a dismal mango season this year of 2022, the great mango reset!

Best ones so far:

Carrie
Valencia Pride
Coconut Cream
Be very careful and mindful of what you sow, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Peak mango season hasn't even started in Central Florida for us who protected our bloom. The tropical storm was south of most of us and it has been a less than average rainy season so far.In no particular order Marc Anthony Bombay seedling local favorite Julie Orange Sherbet and Phoenix from West Palm Beach Dot and Dwarf Hawaiian from my backyard. Accidentally knocked off a Sugarloaf so they're getting close to being ready. Honorable mention lemon meringue and Pickering from my backyard.

Orange sherbert, sweet tart , 1 and 2, respectively and Maha Chanok was consistently great.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.

PPK/LM, but other than that I've been eating mangos mostly from the neighborhood--quite a few seedling trees.

My Glenn's have been excellent this year... Massive bumper crop.   Had two different flushes, one early and one late.  So they have been constantly providing since mid-May.   I only have room for one more (or could top work one of my Glenn), probably a VP.

Had a couple of Sweet Tarts today. OMG! Sweet Tart rules so far this year. Perfect mango, even overripe.

Got a nice lineup for the next few days, so will see if anything gives it a run.

Standouts from the West Coast of FLA:
Pickering
Tong Dam
Gedong Gincu*
Bailey's Marvel

I'm almost certain what I thought was a Pim Seng Mun at a 2017 mango tasting was in fact Tong Dam

Standouts from the East Coast of FLA:
Pineapple Pleasure
Guava
Lemon Meringue
Dupuis**
Bailey's Marvel
Sri Lanka

The following caveats occurred as a result of lingering effects of Covid:
*first bites were great, but the taste degraded to a pumpernickel and garlic flavor that was not detected by my girlfriend
**my girlfriend loved this one but I couldn't taste the flavors she claimed were present

We had the opportunity to try a Beatrice, and it would be a great mango for those who love the likes of Angie. We are not those kind of people.

What makes for a "bad season" for mangoes? Is it too much rain at the wrong time, or not enough?

Tonight's unique special mango is a Blackie seedling that came from Jamaica 8 years ago.
It was recently given the name Black Julie. Reaction of my wife. Oh my gosh! This is the bomb! It is slightly tart but gets sweeter and sweeter the closer you get to the seed and completely fiberless. She looked me straight in the eyes and said get the budwood. That has never happened before. She said it is in same League as Julie but uniquely different

bovine421, did you mean completely fiberless, or was it completely fibrous?

Thanks flip top for proofreading fiberless. I'll go back and make the correction. That's what makes it unique blackie mangoes are known to be very sweet but have a lot of fibers like East Indian. Black Julie will be grafted onto my Bombay which has Marc Anthony and will soon have Starch. The ultimate West Indian cocktail tree

Not sure about best but I enjoyed DOT and Winters a lot. Both from tropical acres. Other honorable mentions so far, Phoenix, honey kiss, Pickering, Cac

This Sugarloaf I knocked off the tree 6 days ago We just had it tonight it was extremely sweet. We had one previously that fell off the tree but it was a little watery As my wife would say it was just there. This one she says is very good. This is the first crop off of this tree. I told her to go and pick the rest tomorrow.

shot, can you go into some detail with regard to Sugarloaf of how you knew when to pick and how you knew it was ready to eat?

It had a subtle yellow cast compared to others next to it.I bumped into the tree with some equipment and two fell off very light yellow smooth skin and very sweet.I think at this point I could pick others and let ripen off the tree for very good quality as the sugar level was so high at this point.
