Root prune to control size?
« on: July 23, 2022, 06:02:55 AM »
Does anyone root prune when they prune in order to control size?

My mango trees have bounced back quite remarkably post freeze, which I'm attributing to their root system. So I got to thinking, would root pruning help keep a vigorous tree in check when done in conjunction with pruning above ground?

Not sure how easy/convenient it could be done, but just a thought I had when considering the rebound my mango trees had after a seriously severe pruning . . .

I have begun aggressively root pruning container trees once they become productive, and pruning foliage at the same time.  I can't say if the root pruning helps reduce vigor, but I have never had it cause any problems so far.  Some trees may not like it, though, not sure about mango.  So far citrus, eugenias, guava tolerate their root ball being literally sliced in half with a saw.
