Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting Jaboticaba
« on: January 27, 2012, 09:24:26 PM »
I've always wondered and wanted to try approach grafting jaboticaba onto my in-ground guava (my wife will probably kill me for messing with this guava tree).  If successful, wouldn't jaboticaba benefit from the guava's vigorous growth?  Has anyone ever tried something like this?  After all, they're in the same family.

Interesting that a lot of people are naming pluots. I like them myself but have never had a fresh one off the tree to compare.

I can't speak for other cultivars because I never cared much for them, a combination of things ranging from tart to too sweet while others with extremely tart skin.  But the Flavor Queen pluots grown locally here are heavenly  ;D

ALL the Mexican supermarkets in my area have Tortillera dept, I should go grocery shopping more often and hope they're really Cuban owned  ;)

Way too difficult with just 5.  These are based on taste alone and not its versatility, in no particular order:

mangosteen
rambutan (maybe pulasan someday, when I'm lucky enough)
mango
cherimoya
sapodilla / fig (perfect tree ripened spread over a piece of toast ) :)
Flavor Queen pluots ... wait, is that six or seven?   ;D

Brown Turkey fig = Tommy Atkins mango

Well done, Alexi.  Greatly appreciated  :)
I don't speak a lick of spanish so that's a great help.

Has anyone had long-term success with planting 2 or 3 tropical fruit trees (let's say mango, for the sake of argument) in one hole?

I'd love to see a picture of two or three ten-foot tall trees sharing one location.

Harry has a 3 in one.

oh man, that is effin terrible.  I hope these a-holes are caught and charged.
Forget the pitbull idea, a very entertaining thought but that would just give them a better reason to sue every penny out of you.

Whoah....drooling!
That's one of the things I'm looking to add this year, a sapodilla but Hasya though.

This may clutter things up a bit but another enhancement to add is TOP / BOTTOM of page buttons.  I browse with my phone all day, scrolling up & down the many posts in long threads ain't too much.

Aside from that, this forum is freakin' awesome!!!  Love the NEW post feature :)

Looks great Gwenn.  I wonder if you have "tree rats" and the likes in PR, I've seen a lot of home plantings done around fruit trees to deter squirrels.  Did you force bloom on them or they're all about the same in age and bloomed roughly the same time?

That's pretty neat looking, Adam.  What's with that dork wearing an orange shirting getting in the way of a beautiful mango picture? j/k   ;)    are those trees in the same potting mix you'd mentioned in the other thread?

one of the two branches on mine is trying to push something but too small to tell, with my luck it's probably just branching out  :'( :'(

Berto, are you talking about the massive cherimoya tree Steven has in Madeira island?

yea, it's a bit sensitive to the cold.  I forgot to bring my 12" seedling inside, it croaked with those early cold snaps in December  :'(

Tommy Atkins is an excellent mango, you just don't know it.  Most versatile IMO  eg:  instead of throwing a shoe or rock at someone and risk getting a beating, throw a Tommy Atkins.  They'd most likely thank you for the fruit and befriend you, now that's what you call killing two birds with one mango...figuratively :)

Another option which I think will be a huge hit is for us to host our version of La Tomatina, but with Tommy Atkins.  Just make sure they're on the overripe side

Noel,
In Northeast Brazil, we make ice cubes with coconut water and then, we add some scotch. Yummy!

That's a good idea. Will have to try one day.

Definitely trying this one out  :)
