Depends. Is it a newly air layered plant? If so it's going to grow very little first year as it's going to most most of its energy into enlarging its root system.

My Biew Kiew Longan tree has been in the ground about four years. It was a three foot tall airlayer when planted in the ground. The first season as Oscar mentioned was very slow going but after that it started taking off. Its now about 15 plus feet tall and about the same wide.

Lucky you! I would say that's probably pretty unusual, unless you've had the air layer some years in a pot before you planted it into the ground?

My mom has a biew kiew that fruited at 7ft x 7ft, just over two years in the ground.  One of my longans that I got in a 1 gal has a handful of fruit on it now at about 4 ft and it has been in the ground less than a year.

I think average is at least 3 years till fruiting. A lot depends on how long the plant has been in the pot before planting, how well formed the roots are, and the caliper of the plant.

My Longan was fresh from the nursery when I got it. I immediately topped it at about 2.5 ft and it sprouted what is now the scaffold branches. I removed the initial bloom spikes and the tree grew a strange panicle directly from the trunk. I incorporated lots of organic matter into the soil and also gave most my trees soil drenches with Seaweed extract and I believe this is at least part of the reason this tree fruited so young. We also have relatively cool winters here which is supposed to benefit induction of flowering.

My experience is limited to the far north of zone 7 and Longan seedlings grow faster than anything else I have ever planted - faster than avocado, faster than papaya. Not only is it fast, it handles the stress of overwintering in a cool hoophouse better than other tropicals. I doubt it will ever fruit this far north, and being seed grown, but still - a surprisingly happy, healthy, fast growing seedling.

I'm with TriangleJohn -- up in a cold climate (Michigan), and my three longan seedlings were seed-grown. I can't tell you what type of longan they are, but they originate from Thailand.

I started them last December. They kept getting bigger until about... oh, March/April. Then when summer rolled around I tried putting them outside. They did OK, but they stopped growing. They also got a little wind damage, so I ended up trimming some of the leaves back. I brought them inside permanently in October and added some fertilizer to their soil. They've just started sprouting new branches and leaves. But at 11-months-old, the tallest of my longan is still only 7½". By comparison, I just measured my tallest jackfruit at 13", and they were only planted in September of this year.

Strictly speaking most longans are classified as sub tropicals.
